What Is Being Made
The Bâtonnage collection features three coordinated knitted accessories inspired by the winemaking process of stirring grape solids during fermentation. This downloadable knitting pattern includes a cozy cowl, boot toppers, and legwarmers designed with a deliberate swirling pattern that mimics a paddle dragging through fermenting wine. Each piece showcases an artistic approach to functional knitwear, combining practical warmth with visual storytelling.
Design and Inspiration
Named after the French winemaking technique of bâtonnage, these accessories feature a distinctive visual aesthetic that references the wine industry. The swirling pattern throughout each piece is intentionally designed to evoke movement and the sensory experience of wine production, making these garments conversation pieces as well as practical layering items.
Finished Measurements and Sizing
- Cowl: One size with 9-inch width and 26-inch circumference
- Boot Toppers: Available in two sizes—Small and Large—with 12.5-inch width (Small) or 14.5-inch width (Large), and 3-inch length
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs multiple stitch patterns to create visual interest and texture. The pattern utilizes 1x1 ribbing as a foundational stitch, which provides elasticity and a classic fitted appearance ideal for accessories that need to stay in place. The collection also features arrowhead lace stitch work, which creates an open, decorative pattern that adds sophistication while maintaining breathability in the finished pieces.
The combination of ribbed and lace stitches demonstrates intermediate knitting skills, requiring competency with both basic stitch construction and more complex lace techniques. The swirling visual pattern is achieved through thoughtful stitch placement and shaping rather than color work, making this an excellent project for knitters looking to develop their stitch definition and pattern-reading abilities.
Gauge Information
- 1x1 Rib: 16 stitches and 20 rows equal 4 inches
- Arrowhead Lace: 14.5 stitches and 22.5 rows equal 4 inches
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Bâtonnage pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, specifically calling for Lion Brand Wool Ease in the cranberry colorway. This yarn blend contains 80% acrylic and 20% wool, offering a practical combination of durability, easy care, and warmth. Each skein provides 197 yards (80 meters) per 85-gram weight, and the pattern requires only 1 skein, making this an economical project that works well for stash-busting or gift-giving.
The acrylic-wool blend makes these accessories machine-washable and suitable for everyday wear, while the wool content adds insulation and helps the finished pieces maintain their shape. This fiber composition is ideal for accessories that will receive regular wear and washing.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for US #10 (6mm) needles in two formats: one set of double-point needles for circular knitting sections and one set of straight needles for flat knitting sections. This needle sizing pairs appropriately with worsted weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge.
Additional notions required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and an optional stitch marker to help track pattern repeats and construction points. These minimal notions make the project accessible and budget-friendly.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Bâtonnage is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with lace patterns and multiple stitch textures. The project provides an excellent opportunity to develop pattern-reading skills and understand how different stitch gauges interact within a single design.
