What is Being Made

The Banff Hoody Ladies is a crocheted pullover hoody designed for women, available in sizes XS through XL. This garment features a fitted silhouette with a finished bust circumference ranging from 34 inches (XS) to 46 inches (XL), and a consistent length of approximately 21 to 22 inches from nape to hem. The hoody includes long sleeves and an attached hood, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for casual wear.

Construction Method

The Banff Hoody is constructed using a top-down crochet approach, beginning at the neckline and working downward to the hem. This construction method allows for easy fitting adjustments and eliminates the need for seaming the body. Once the main body is complete, the sleeves are added, followed by the hood, which is worked last. This sequential building process is typical of modern crochet garment design and provides flexibility in customization.

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): The primary stitch used throughout the garment, forming the foundation of the fabric structure
  • Single Crochet (sc): Used for shaping and construction details
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): A decrease stitch employed for shaping the garment
  • Chain (ch): Used for foundation rows and stitch spacing
  • Slip Stitch (slst): Used to join rounds and connect sections
  • Back Loop Only (BLO): A technique used to create textural variations and ribbed effects

Crochet Techniques

This intermediate-level pattern incorporates several key crochet techniques. The garment employs stitch decreases (sc2tog) for shaping the body and sleeves to achieve a fitted silhouette. The back loop only technique is utilized to create specific textural details or ribbed sections. The pattern uses stitch markers to track progress and maintain consistency across multiple sizes. Weaving in ends with a tapestry needle is required for finishing the garment professionally.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for #4 worsted weight yarn (also known as aran weight). The sample was created using Bernat Premium yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: XS requires approximately 1100 yards, S requires 1222 yards, M requires 1375 yards, with larger sizes requiring additional yardage.

Hook: A J (6.0 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the project.

Additional Tools: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a measuring tape for checking dimensions, and stitch markers for tracking progress are necessary to complete the garment.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 inches by 4 inches equaling 12 half double crochet stitches and 9 rows. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as the finished bust circumference ranges from 34 inches in XS to 46 inches in XL. The pattern is designed to fit bust measurements ranging from 28 to 40+ inches depending on the size selected, with consistent nape-to-hem length across most sizes.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and shaping techniques. The top-down construction method and use of decreases require comfort with reading stitch counts and following numerical size designations throughout the pattern.
