Product Description

My Balloons Pillow is one of my book cover inspired pillows. It is inspired by the cover of my favorite childhood book: Wendy Mass' 11 Birthdays. The front and back side of the pillow are composed of rows of double crochet stitches. The intricate color changes on the front side form the balloons. There are photos included in the pattern to explain how to crochet with multiple balls of yarn at once. I recently added a color chart for the front side of the pillow. I used MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton yarn, but any sport weight yarn will work. You will need two balls of the background color, and many small balls of yarn for the balloons. Each balloon does not require a lot of yarn, so this is a great stash busting project to use up small balls of yarn. You will also need a 14 by 14 inch pillow insert and 5 buttons. The buttons hold the bottom of the pillow together, and allow the pillow to be taken on and off the insert.

Project Overview

The Balloons Pillow is a crochet cushion project inspired by the cover of the beloved children's book 11 Birthdays. This intermediate-level design features a decorative front panel and coordinating back panel, both constructed using fundamental crochet techniques. The pillow is designed to fit a 14 by 14 inch (35.5 cm) square pillow insert, making it a practical home décor item that combines colorwork artistry with functional cushion construction.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a finished decorative pillow cover with two distinct sides. The front of the pillow showcases an intricate balloon design created through strategic color changes, while the back provides a complementary solid or simplified design. The two panels are joined together and finished with button closures, allowing the pillow insert to be inserted and the cover to be removable for care and maintenance.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The Balloons Pillow employs double crochet stitches as the primary stitch throughout both the front and back panels. The design is worked in rows, building the fabric vertically to create the required square dimensions. The most distinctive technical element of this project is the extensive use of color changes integrated throughout the construction.

The color-changing technique requires working with multiple balls of yarn simultaneously during certain sections of the pattern. To manage this complexity, the designer recommends organizing all active yarn balls in a basket to prevent tangling and maintain tension control. This approach allows the crocheter to switch between colors efficiently without cutting and rejoining yarn at every color transition, resulting in a more polished finished piece.

A detailed color chart is provided on page 5 of the pattern to guide color placement and changes throughout the front panel, ensuring accurate reproduction of the balloon design. This visual reference tool helps intermediate crocheters track their progress through the multiple color sections.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn Weight: Sport weight yarn in multiple colors to create the balloon design
  • Crochet Hook: 3.00 mm hook, appropriate for sport weight yarn
  • Finishing Supplies: Scissors and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
  • Pillow Insert: 14 by 14 inch (35.5 cm) square pillow insert
  • Closure Hardware: Five buttons measuring 1.2 to 1.5 cm in diameter

Skill Level and Suitability

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle color work and multi-yarn management. While double crochet is a basic stitch, the coordination required to manage multiple colors and follow the detailed chart elevates the project beyond beginner level. The pattern includes helpful tips and visual guidance to support successful completion.

Design Inspiration

The Balloons Pillow draws direct inspiration from the cover artwork of 11 Birthdays, translating the book's visual aesthetic into a tactile crochet creation. This thematic connection makes the pillow a meaningful project for fans of the book and adds narrative depth to the finished home décor piece.
