Baby Love Blanket in Bubble Stitch by A Crafty Life by Mandy

Project Overview

The Baby Love Blanket is a versatile knitted throw designed by Mandi Wilson of A Crafty Life by Mandy. This beginner-friendly blanket project combines simplicity with beautiful visual appeal, making it suitable for multiple uses including car seat blankets, crib covers, knee blankets, or even adult bed throws. The modular design allows crafters to customize the finished size by adjusting the number of squares knitted, offering flexibility for various intended purposes and preferences.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a square blanket measuring approximately 60cm x 60cm (23.5 inches x 23.5 inches) after blocking. The blanket is constructed from multiple knitted squares that are assembled together, with decorative heart motifs and pom pom embellishments. The modular square construction means the blanket can be made smaller or larger depending on how many squares the crafter chooses to include in their final design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Baby Love Blanket employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The primary construction method uses basic knitting stitches to create individual squares that form the blanket structure. The pattern offers flexibility in finishing techniques, providing options for either basic crochet or daisy stitch embellishment depending on personal preference and skill level.

Bubble Stitch Application: The bubble stitch technique creates texture and visual interest throughout the blanket design. This stitch adds dimension while remaining accessible to knitters new to the craft.

Heart Motifs: The pattern includes templates for knitting heart shapes, allowing crafters to incorporate decorative heart elements into their blanket squares. These hearts can be worked using the provided templates as guides.

Finishing Options: Crafters may choose between basic crochet techniques or daisy stitch for final embellishments, with full instructions provided for both methods. This flexibility allows makers to select the finishing approach that best matches their comfort level and available tools.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Baby Love Blanket pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight option that works quickly while maintaining excellent stitch definition. The specific yarn recommendations include:

  • Primary Yarn: 4 x 100g skeins of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in Paper White (100 yards per skein)
  • Contrast Yarn: 2 x 100g skeins of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in Slate Grey (105 yards per skein)

The combination of Paper White as the dominant color with Slate Grey accents creates a soft, neutral color palette suitable for modern nurseries and family homes. DK weight yarn is described as a fast and easy medium for this project, allowing crafters to complete their blanket in reasonable time while achieving consistent, professional-looking results.

Tools and Equipment

The pattern requires minimal equipment, keeping setup simple for beginners:

  • Knitting Needles: 1 pair of 4mm needles for the main blanket construction
  • Finishing Tools: Large eye tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembling squares
  • Optional Crochet Hook: 4mm crochet hook for crafters choosing the basic crochet finishing option
  • Pom Pom Maker: 6cm pom pom maker for creating decorative embellishments

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Rated as a beginner project, the Baby Love Blanket is designed to be accessible to knitters new to the craft. The straightforward square construction, simple stitch patterns, and clear instructions make this an ideal first blanket project. The pattern's flexibility—allowing crafters to adjust size and choose between finishing techniques—means makers can work at their own pace and comfort level.
