Baby Bamboo Crib Blanket Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Baby Bamboo Crib Blanket is a beginner-friendly knitted blanket designed by madmonkeyknits (pattern no. 1416). This finished piece measures 20 x 24 inches (51 x 61 centimeters), making it an ideal size for a crib or small baby blanket. The blanket combines practical functionality with decorative stitch work, featuring a garter stitch border that frames a central patterned section.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for beginners while creating visual interest through strategic stitch manipulation. The blanket begins with a garter stitch foundation worked over 4 rows, which creates a stable, textured edge. The main body features a repeating pattern that alternates between knit and purl rows, with the purl rows creating a smooth stockinette appearance in the center while maintaining garter stitch borders on both sides. The pattern incorporates increases and decreases to create a lacy, textured effect that adds dimension without requiring advanced shaping techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – The foundational stitch used throughout, particularly in the garter stitch borders and pattern rows
  • Purl (P) – Used in alternating rows to create contrast and texture in the central section
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog) – A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count by one, used three times in each pattern repeat to create shaping
  • Knit Increase One (Kinc1) – An increase worked by knitting into both the front and back of a single stitch, used six times in each pattern repeat to add stitches and create the lacy effect
  • Garter Stitch (Gt.st) – Created by knitting every row, used for the initial border and the side edges throughout the blanket

Materials

This pattern calls for Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo yarn or any comparable bamboo DK weight yarn. The blanket requires 4 balls of 50-gram yarn in blue. Bamboo yarn is an excellent choice for baby items, offering natural softness, breathability, and gentle properties ideal for sensitive infant skin. The pattern requires one pair of 4.00 millimeter (US 6) knitting needles. The tension is worked at 22 stitches and 28 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in pattern on 4.00 mm needles, which is typical for DK weight yarn and ensures the finished blanket will have the correct dimensions and drape.

Pattern Structure

The blanket is constructed using a four-row repeating pattern that creates a balanced, symmetrical design. Pattern Row 1 establishes the main textural element with its combination of decreases and increases. Pattern Row 2 introduces purl stitches in the center while maintaining knit stitches at the edges. Pattern Row 3 returns to all knit stitches for a solid row. Pattern Row 4 mirrors Pattern Row 2 with purl stitches in the center. This four-row repeat is worked across 116 cast-on stitches, with the pattern repeat contained within the central section while 4 stitches on each side remain in garter stitch for a neat, finished border.
