Product Description

This pattern is for a mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.

You will need 2 colors of yarn - one for the background and one for the Anchor. You could also use variegated yarn for the background, or use 2-3 colors of yarn to create a striped or gradient background as in the sample image.

This is a great way to use up scraps! For projects using 2 colors, (one for the background & one for the featured design), you will need approximately 2 oz of each color for a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn.

Pattern is in US crochet terms.

Awesome Ocean Mosaic Square: Anchors Away

Project Overview

The Awesome Ocean Mosaic Square: Anchors Away is a crochet cushion project designed by Cyndie Birdsong. This intermediate-level pattern creates a decorative square suitable for pillow covers and other home décor applications. The design features an ocean-themed mosaic motif with anchor elements, combining visual interest with accessible crochet techniques.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crochet square ideal for cushion projects. The finished piece showcases an ocean-inspired mosaic design with anchor imagery, making it perfect for nautical-themed home décor, pillow covers, or as part of a larger blanket or throw project. The mosaic approach creates interesting shapes and textures that bring the ocean theme to life through color and stitch placement.

Craft and Technique

This project uses mosaic crochet, a technique that creates intricate patterns and designs through strategic color changes and stitch placement. Mosaic crochet allows crafters to produce visually complex designs that may appear difficult but are constructed using fundamental crochet stitches. The pattern includes graph charts to guide color placement and design elements, helping crocheters understand how to read mosaic patterns even if they are new to this specific technique.

The designer notes that while mosaic crochet can initially seem confusing when reading graph charts, the pattern is written to make the technique accessible. Prior experience with basic crochet and chart reading is beneficial, though the pattern aims to clarify the process for intermediate-level crafters.

Stitches and Construction

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined in a mosaic crochet structure. Mosaic patterns typically employ basic stitches worked in alternating colors to create the design, with graph charts indicating where color changes occur and which stitches to work in each section.

Materials

This pattern is designed for aran and worsted weight yarn, providing good stitch definition for the mosaic design. The specific yardage and color requirements are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern. Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for their chosen yarn weight to achieve proper gauge and finished dimensions.

Pattern Format

The Awesome Ocean Mosaic Square: Anchors Away is available as a downloadable PDF that includes complete instructions and components needed to complete the project. The pattern features written instructions alongside graph charts to guide the mosaic crochet process.
