At the Opera Armwarmers by ColorJoy by LynnH
Project Overview
At the Opera is a sophisticated knitted armwarmer pattern designed to add elegance and warmth to formal occasions. Created by designer LynnH of ColorJoy, this pattern delivers the glamorous aesthetic of traditional opera gloves while maintaining the practical advantage of leaving fingers completely free. The open-finger design makes these armwarmers versatile for evening gowns, wedding dresses, and formal wear, while also offering creative styling options through scrunching or lacing the arm with chain or ribbon for personalized looks ranging from funky and steampunk to casual and refined.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of dressy armwarmers—elongated hand and arm coverings that extend from the fingertips up the forearm. Unlike full gloves, armwarmers leave all five fingers exposed while providing coverage and warmth from the knuckles to approximately mid-forearm or higher, depending on desired length. The design accommodates six different sizes ranging from Women's XS through 2X, allowing customization to fit various arm dimensions.
Construction Techniques
At the Opera armwarmers are constructed using a fingertip-up building method, beginning at the tip of the hand and progressing upward toward the wrist and forearm. The pattern employs a two-stage knitting technique: the lower portion is knit flat (back and forth on straight needles), then transitions to knitting in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the upper sections. This hybrid approach allows for precise shaping at the hand while maintaining efficiency in the larger circumference sections of the arm.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The foundation of both armwarmer variations is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, refined fabric appropriate for formal wear. The pattern provides two distinct design variations:
- Variation Ami (A): Features 29 rows of simple vertical intarsia colorwork, allowing knitters to introduce a second color in a straightforward geometric pattern that adds visual interest without excessive complexity.
- Variation Bliss (D): Incorporates eyelets and laces, creating an openwork design that adds delicate detailing and allows for decorative lacing with chain or ribbon through the eyelet holes.
Both variations maintain the core stockinette base, with the decorative elements integrated into the overall structure rather than applied separately.
Sizing and Finished Dimensions
The pattern offers six size options with the following specifications:
- Women's XS: Finished circumference approximately 6.5 inches (unstretched), fits arms approximately 6–7.75 inches, length approximately 17 inches
- Women's S: Finished circumference approximately 6.75 inches, fits arms approximately 6.25–8 inches, length approximately 17.25 inches
- Women's M: Finished circumference approximately 7.25 inches, fits arms approximately 7–8.75 inches, length approximately 17.5 inches
- Women's L: Finished circumference approximately 7.5 inches, fits arms approximately 7.25–9 inches, length approximately 17.75 inches
- Women's XL: Finished circumference approximately 8 inches, fits arms approximately 7.75–9.75 inches, length approximately 18.25 inches
- Women's 2X: Finished circumference approximately 8.5 inches, fits arms approximately 8.25–10.25 inches, length approximately 18.75 inches
The pattern also allows for customization of length, enabling knitters to adjust the finished measurements to their personal preferences.
Gauge and Yarn Weight
At the Opera is designed for 3-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn that produces refined, delicate fabric suitable for formal wear. The required gauge is 30 stitches and 44 rows per 4 inches when working both flat stockinette and stockinette in the round on size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles. Maintaining consistent gauge across both flat and circular knitting is essential for proper fit and drape.
Materials Required
Knitters will need 3-ply yarn in their chosen color(s), size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles for flat kn
