Arthur Waistcoat by Frogginette Knitting Patterns
Project Overview
Arthur is a children's waistcoat knitting pattern designed by Lisa Chemery for Frogginette Knitting Patterns. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a classic layering piece suitable for babies and children, with nine size options ranging from 3 months through 10 years old. The waistcoat is worked in the round using stockinette stitch and colorwork techniques, making it an intermediate-level knitting project.
Sizing and Fit
The pattern provides comprehensive sizing across a wide age range. Chest measurements to fit range from 16 inches (40.5 cm) for the 3-month size up to 28 inches (71 cm) for the 10-year size. The finished garment chest circumference ranges from 18.75 inches (47.5 cm) to 30.25 inches (77 cm), offering appropriate ease for comfortable wear. The pattern recommends selecting size based on the recipient's actual chest measurement rather than age label alone, allowing flexibility in choosing desired ease.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern. The stockinette stitch gauge is 23 stitches by 32 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the round after blocking using the smaller circular needle. The main colorwork pattern gauge is 23 stitches by 30 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in the round after blocking using the larger circular needle. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to match these recommended gauges for accurate finished measurements.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Arthur employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The primary construction method is knitting in the round, which creates seamless fabric. The pattern features stockinette stitch as the base stitch, providing a smooth, classic fabric surface. Additionally, the design incorporates colorwork patterning, which adds visual interest and requires managing multiple yarn colors while maintaining consistent tension.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn Weight: Sport weight yarn is used throughout this pattern
- Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) diameter circular needles are required for the stockinette stitch sections. The pattern also calls for larger circular needles for the colorwork sections, with exact size to be determined by individual gauge swatching
- Needle Length: Circular needle length begins at 16 inches, suitable for working small circumferences in the round
Pattern Structure
The waistcoat construction utilizes circular needle techniques throughout, eliminating the need for seaming. The pattern includes both stockinette stitch sections and colorwork pattern sections, each with their own specific gauge requirements. This dual-gauge approach is typical of designs combining solid-colored and patterned sections, requiring knitters to be comfortable adjusting their tension or needle size between different sections of the garment.
Skill Level
Classified as an intermediate knitting project, Arthur requires foundational skills including casting on, knitting in the round with circular needles, maintaining consistent gauge, and executing colorwork techniques. This pattern is well-suited for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to expand their technical abilities.
