What Is Being Made
The Arkansas River Pullover is a men's knitted sweater designed by Irina Anikeeva. This pullover is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL, with finished chest circumferences from 35¾ inches (89.5 cm) to 52¾ inches (132 cm). The garment is shown modeled at the 44¼-inch (110.5 cm) size with 6¼ inches (15.5 cm) of positive ease, making it suitable for a relaxed, comfortable fit.
Knitting Techniques
The Arkansas River Pullover employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create an efficient construction method. The body of the sweater is worked in one piece from the bottom up to the underarm, where it is then divided to allow the front and back sections to be worked separately. This seamless construction minimizes finishing work and creates a clean, professional appearance.
The sleeves are worked in the round using circular needles, which is a standard technique for creating seamless cylindrical sleeves. The sleeve cap—the curved top portion of the sleeve that connects to the armhole—is worked using shaping techniques to create a proper fit at the shoulder. A provisional cast-on using a size G/4 mm crochet hook and waste yarn is employed, allowing for a flexible edge that can be grafted or joined later in the construction process.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Arkansas River Pullover is Stockinette stitch, a fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working in the round). Stockinette stitch produces a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side, making it an ideal choice for showcasing the yarn's natural color and texture.
The pattern utilizes standard shaping techniques including increases and decreases to create the armholes, neckline, and sleeve cap shaping. Stitch markers are used throughout the construction to help track pattern repeats and shaping points, ensuring accurate increases and decreases at the correct locations.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Arkansas River Pullover is knitted using Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok, a yarn composed of 100% fine highland wool. This natural fiber yarn offers excellent warmth, elasticity, and durability—qualities essential for a well-fitting pullover sweater. The yarn is available in the Main Color (MC) #1301 storm cloud, a light gray shade that provides a neutral, versatile colorway suitable for various styling options.
Woolstok is spun at a worsted weight, which is a medium-weight yarn category. At worsted weight, this yarn knits at a gauge of 19 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) on larger needles, creating a fabric with good drape and structure. Each 50-gram skein yields 123 yards (112 meters), allowing crafters to calculate yardage requirements based on their chosen size.
The pattern requires circular needles in the appropriate size for the gauge (larger needles for the body and sleeves), along with a spare circular needle of the same size for holding stitches. Additional notions include a size G/4 mm crochet hook for the provisional cast-on, waste yarn, stitch holders, and a tapestry needle for finishing and grafting.
Difficulty Level
The Arkansas River Pullover is classified as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The intermediate classification reflects the use of multiple construction methods (flat and in-the-round knitting), shaping techniques, and finishing skills such as provisional cast-on and grafting. Knitters should be comfortable with increasing and decreasing stitches, reading pattern instructions, and managing multiple needles simultaneously.
