Product Description
“You belong among the wildflowers, You belong in a boat out at sea, Sail away, kill off the hours, You belong somewhere you feel free...” -- Tom Petty
Among the Wildflowers Cowl is an easy project, and skills required are chain, double crochet, triple crochet, and sewing a simple seam. A schematic and a stitch chart are included as well as written instructions.
This cowl uses about about 260 yards (~60 grams) of fingering weight yarn. This is perfect for leftover balls of fingering weight yarn you might have, or those skeins that do not come with a lot of yardage. For my cowl, I used Malabrigo Mechita, my favorite single-ply yarn, that comes in many gorgeous vibrant colors. The color shown is Mechita in “Lluvias”.
Best of all this crochet cowl is very wearer friendly, and does not require any specific wrapping technique for wearing so it makes a great crochet gift.
Among the Wildflowers Cowl by CJ Brady Designs
Project Overview
The Among the Wildflowers Cowl is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl designed by CJ Brady Designs. This project transforms a beloved stitch pattern originally featured in the Among the Wildflowers scarf (published in 2018) into a versatile neck accessory. The cowl is an ideal quick-to-complete project that can be finished in several hours, making it perfect for gifting or using leftover yarn from your stash.
Construction Method and Techniques
This cowl is constructed using a sideways crochet method, which creates a unique fabric structure and allows for interesting stitch pattern development across the width of the piece. The construction process involves three main stages: crocheting the body sideways, adding the edging detail, and completing a final seam to join the ends into a cowl shape. Blocking is incorporated into the finishing process to help set the stitches and achieve the intended drape and appearance.
Stitch Pattern and Design Features
The pattern utilizes an easy-to-memorize row repeat stitch pattern that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to beginner crocheters. The same distinctive stitch pattern and edging from the original Among the Wildflowers scarf are featured in this cowl design, providing a cohesive aesthetic. The repeating rows are straightforward enough that crafters can work through the project without constantly referencing the pattern instructions.
Yarn and Materials
The Among the Wildflowers Cowl requires approximately 260 yards (about 60 grams) of yarn. The pattern calls for sock or fingering weight yarn, classified as 4-ply weight. This yardage requirement makes the cowl an excellent project for using up leftover yarn balls or partial skeins that may not contain sufficient yardage for larger projects. The designer used Malabrigo Mechita, a single-ply yarn option, for the original sample.
Pattern Format
This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF file, allowing immediate access to complete instructions upon purchase. The digital format makes it convenient for crafters to reference on devices while working on their project.
