Amigurumi Mitchell the Spider
What is Being Made
Mitchell the Spider is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock. This small stuffed animal measures 4 inches tall with a leg-span of 14 inches, making it a compact yet poseable decorative piece or children's toy. The spider was originally designed in October 2011 and represents an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with foundational skills.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This amigurumi pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques essential to creating three-dimensional stuffed toys. The primary stitches used throughout the construction include:
- Chain (ch) – Used to create foundation rows and joining points
- Single Crochet (sc) – The main stitch for building the body and structural elements of the spider
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) – A decrease stitch used for shaping and tapering sections, particularly important for creating the spider's legs and refining the body contours
The pattern demonstrates how basic stitches can be combined with strategic increases and decreases to form the rounded body characteristic of amigurumi design, as well as the elongated legs that define a spider's anatomy.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Mitchell the Spider is designed with flexibility in yarn weight selection. The sample shown was crocheted using worsted weight yarn in 100% wool (Ella Rae Classic), requiring 90 yards of black yarn (color #32) for the main body and 10 yards of white yarn (color #01) for accent details.
The pattern explicitly allows crafters to substitute different yarn weights by following the hook size recommendations on the yarn ball band and adjusting gauge as needed. For those desiring a larger, more substantial toy, bulky weight yarn is recommended, though this will increase yardage requirements beyond the stated amounts.
Additional Materials and Tools
- Crochet Hook: Size H hook (or size appropriate to chosen yarn weight)
- Tapestry Needle: For weaving in yarn ends and assembling components
- 12mm Black Animal Eyes: For creating the spider's facial features
- Polyester Stuffing: For filling the body and legs to achieve proper shape and structure
Pattern Flexibility and Customization
A notable feature of this pattern is its adaptability to various yarn weights. Crafters are encouraged to experiment with different yarn options while maintaining proper gauge and adjusting hook sizes accordingly. The pattern notes that bulkier yarn selections will produce a larger, more cuddly version of Mitchell while requiring additional yardage beyond the worsted weight specifications.
