Alvar Socks by Fiona Alice

What is Being Made

Alvar is a pair of knitted socks designed by independent designer Fiona Alice. These socks are constructed using the toe-up method, a popular technique that begins at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. The pattern features a traditional slip stitch heel, providing durability and a classic construction method favored by many sock knitters.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters:

  • Toe-up construction: The socks are worked from the toe upward, allowing knitters to try on the socks as they progress and adjust the leg length to their preference.
  • Magic loop method: The pattern is primarily written for the magic loop technique, a method that uses a single long circular needle to work small circumference projects. The top of the foot is worked across the first needle position, while the sole of the foot is worked across the second needle position.
  • Slip stitch heel: A traditional heel construction that creates a reinforced, durable heel suitable for everyday wear.
  • Striping: The pattern incorporates contrasting stripes using yarn B, adding visual interest to the finished socks.

Stitches Used

Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric of these socks. Stockinette stitch is created by alternating knit rows and purl rows (or knit stitches and purl stitches when working in the round), resulting in a smooth, classic appearance with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side of the fabric.

Materials and Tools Required

The Alvar sock pattern calls for specific needles and notions to achieve the correct gauge and construction:

  • Needles: US 1 / 2.25 mm and US 0 / 2 mm circular needles, 32 inches / 80 cm in length for the magic loop method. Alternatively, a set of five double-pointed needles (DPNs) can be substituted if preferred.
  • Yarn weight: 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn category that produces fine, delicate fabric ideal for socks.
  • Notions: One locking stitch marker and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 stitches by 50 rows to 4 inches / 10 centimeters when worked in stockinette stitch on US 1 / 2.25 mm needles, measured after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit, and knitters are advised to always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Construction Notes for Knitters

While the Alvar pattern is written specifically for the magic loop method, it offers flexibility for knitters who prefer alternative techniques. Those using five double-pointed needles should work the instructions for the first needle across the first and second DPNs, and the instructions for the second needle across the third and fourth DPNs. Placing a second stitch marker after the first and second needles can serve as a helpful reminder to work the first needle instructions across these two needles before continuing with the second needle.
