Product Description

Alice The 1st is a colour-block knitted pillow patter, own design by Blue Balloon Atelier. The pattern looks great on it’s own but also goes well with other Alice designs, as they complement each other really well.

The pattern is bold enough to make a statement in your home, but easy enough to knit the whole pillowcase in a day or two, while sipping your favourite tea.

Deramores Studio Chunky Acrylic was used to create this sample, but any chunky yarn [acrylic or wool, or combination with wool or acrylic preferably], suitable for 7-9mm knitting needles, can be used.

Alice The 1st Knitted Pillow Cover by Kasia Ancuta

Project Overview

Alice The 1st is a knitted pillow cover design created by designer Kasia Ancuta for Blue Balloon Atelier. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished cushion cover measuring approximately 40x40cm (16x16 inches), making it suitable for standard throw pillows and decorative home furnishings. The project is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience who are ready to tackle a complete home décor item.

What You Will Create

This pattern guides you through creating a complete knitted pillow cover—a functional yet decorative textile project that transforms chunky yarn into a modern, quirky cushion covering. The finished piece combines contemporary design sensibilities with practical home décor application, suitable for adding texture and visual interest to living spaces, bedrooms, or seating areas.

Yarn and Materials

The Alice The 1st pillow cover is designed to work with chunky and super chunky weight yarns. The pattern specifically references Deramores Studio Chunky Acrylic yarn as the yarn used in the original project. While this yarn is typically recommended for 9mm needles by the manufacturer, the pattern notes that using 7mm needles instead produces a notably stronger and firmer final product—a deliberate choice preferred for pillow case construction, as the denser fabric provides better structure and durability for a cushion cover that will experience regular use and handling.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

As a knitting project at intermediate difficulty level, Alice The 1st employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for crafters with established skills. Working with chunky yarn on 7mm needles allows for relatively quick project progression while maintaining the precision needed for a finished home goods item. The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches and construction methods suited to creating a flat, wearable textile panel that will serve as a functional pillow cover.

Design and Construction

This pattern represents modern and quirky design philosophy characteristic of Blue Balloon Atelier's aesthetic. The use of chunky yarn creates bold texture and visual presence, while the intermediate skill requirement suggests the pattern includes shaping, finishing techniques, or stitch variations that move beyond basic garter or stockinette stitch work. The deliberate choice to use smaller needles than standard recommendations demonstrates thoughtful pattern engineering for superior final results in a home goods application.
