Product Description

Aksana VF Knitted Socks by L Rose

What is Being Made

Aksana VF is a pair of knitted socks designed by L Rose using a two-color colorwork technique. This downloadable PDF pattern guides knitters through creating fitted socks with contrasting color details at the toe, heel, and ankle cuff. The design is suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a project that combines basic sock construction with color blocking elements.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques:

  • Toe-up construction: The socks are knitted from the toe upward toward the cuff, allowing for easier fitting and the ability to adjust length before binding off
  • Judy's Magic Cast On: A specialized cast-on method used to create the initial stitches at the toe with minimal bulk, ideal for seamless sock construction
  • Two-color colorwork: The pattern incorporates contrasting yarn colors strategically placed at the toe, heel, and ankle border for visual interest
  • Circular knitting: Worked in the round to create seamless socks without side seams

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While the PDF content references stitch markers (M1, M2) indicating pattern repeats, the specific stitch abbreviations and pattern sequences are detailed within the full pattern instructions. The gauge is established at 28 stitches by 36 rows over a 10 centimeter square, which is typical for sock-weight yarn at this needle size.

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for 4-ply or fingering/sock weight yarn in two colors. Knitters need approximately 50 grams of contrast color for the toe, heel, and ankle cuff details, plus one skein of main color yarn for the foot and ankle sections. The designer used Fingering yarn in Rose and Atelier wool balls for the main color, paired with Drops Fabel 50 grams in Purple for contrast.

Needles and Tools: The pattern requires 2.5 millimeter circular needles in a small circumference size, with the option to use 2.5 millimeter double-pointed needles (20 centimeters length) as an alternative. A 2.5 millimeter cable needle is needed for any twisted stitches. Additional supplies include two stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle sock construction and color changes. The toe-up method and Judy's Magic Cast On technique require some experience, though they are well-suited to knitters progressing beyond basic projects.
