Airplane Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet airplane applique pattern designed by Kerri's Crochet. The pattern creates a dimensional fabric airplane that can be used as an applique decoration. The finished airplane features distinct components including a fuselage (body), wings, tail section, and cockpit window, all crocheted separately and then assembled together. This intermediate-level project produces a charming decorative piece suitable for embellishing clothing, blankets, bags, or other textile projects.

Finished Size Options

The pattern offers two size variations depending on yarn weight used:

  • Medium Plane: Approximately 10cm x 11cm (4" x 4.25") when worked in 4 ply crochet cotton
  • Large Plane: Approximately 15cm x 16.5cm (6" x 6.5") when worked in 8 ply wool

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet construction methods appropriate for an intermediate crocheter. The airplane is built by crocheting individual components separately, then assembling them into the finished applique. The pattern uses standard row-by-row construction with shaping techniques including increases (working multiple stitches into single stitches) and decreases (working fewer stitches across rows) to create the contoured shapes of the aircraft body and wings.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches throughout construction:

  • Chain stitch (ch): Used to create foundation chains and turning chains
  • Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch forming the main fabric of the airplane components
  • Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and connecting pieces
  • Treble crochet (tr): Employed for specific shaping or detail work
  • Double treble crochet (dtr): Included in the stitch repertoire for dimensional effects
  • Triple treble crochet (ttr): Available for advanced shaping techniques within the pattern

Materials Required

The pattern specifies 4 ply crochet cotton yarn in four colors to create the realistic airplane design:

  • Red 4 ply crochet cotton
  • Light grey 4 ply crochet cotton
  • Blue 4 ply crochet cotton
  • Yellow 4 ply crochet cotton

Additional materials needed for completion include a 1.25mm crochet hook (sized appropriately for 4 ply yarn), scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, and sewing thread with a sewing needle to stitch the individual crocheted components together into the final assembled airplane applique.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Kerri's Crochet, provided in UK crochet terminology.
