Aiguebrun Aran Girls Shrug by Atelier des Glenettes
What Is Being Made
The Aiguebrun Aran is a knitted shrug designed for girls, featuring a button closure at the front. This garment is sized for children ranging from size 2 through size 14, with dimensions carefully scaled to accommodate growing bodies. The shrug provides arm coverage while maintaining an open front design, making it a versatile layering piece for young wearers.
Sizing and Fit
Sizing is determined by back width measurement, taken from underarm to underarm across the back. The pattern provides seven size options with corresponding height measurements in both centimeters and inches. Size 2 features a back width of 29.5 cm (11 ½ inches) and height of 27 cm (10 ½ inches), while size 14 reaches a back width of 38.5 cm (15 inches) and height of 36 cm (14 inches). Customers should select the closest size that measures just above their child's actual back width measurement for proper fit.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-friendly knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The pattern utilizes several essential stitches and techniques including:
- Knit and purl stitches as foundational stitch elements
- Yarn overs (yo) for creating decorative openwork and shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog) and slip, knit, pass (skp) for decreasing stitches
- Increase four stitches (inc4) technique, performed by working multiple yarn overs and knit stitches within a single stitch to create significant shaping
- Make 1 backwards loop (Mb) for additional increase options
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and maintaining structure
These techniques combine to create shaping and texture throughout the garment while remaining accessible to knitters developing their foundational skills.
Materials and Tools
The Aiguebrun Aran is worked in Aran weight yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size: size 2 requires 280 meters (300 yards), increasing to 500 meters (550 yards) for size 14. The pattern sample was created using (Vi)laines Tordues Aran yarn. Knitters will need circular needles in two sizes: 4.5 mm (US size 7) and 5 mm (US size 8), allowing for gauge adjustments and varied stitch presentations. One stitch marker aids in pattern tracking, and a single 18 mm (¾ inch) button serves as the front closure.
