Poor instructions on putting it together. Not complete
Product Description
African penguin is the sixth and final pattern in the Summer of Sea Creatures 2020. This year we are highlighting endangered species. Please join us in knitting and raising awareness about these animals. Tag me @yarnigans or #summerofseacreatures on instagram. Thanks for joining me again for this fifth year of summer of sea creatures!*
This is probably the most difficult Summer of Sea Creatures pattern due to its different construction. The head is knitted in two parts, and sewn together, then the body is knitted in two parts and sewn together, then a flat base is sewn onto the bottom and the wings are sewn on. Yes the seaming is tedious, but the effort is well worth it. You will need to be able to knit in the round on double pointed needles, as well as do increases and decreases. You will use one entire ball of black yarn and less than half of the white.
African Penguin Knitted Toy by Rachel Borello Carroll
Project Overview
The African Penguin is a knitted toy design created by independent designer Rachel Borello Carroll. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a soft, cuddly representation of the endangered African penguin species. The project combines creative fiber arts with educational content about wildlife conservation.
What Is Being Made
This pattern guides knitters in creating a three-dimensional stuffed toy penguin. The finished toy captures the distinctive appearance of African penguins, which are seabirds native to the south-west coast of Africa. These penguins typically stand about two feet tall in nature and weigh less than eight pounds, making them relatively small seabirds. The knitted version serves as a charming handmade toy that can be displayed, gifted, or used as a decorative piece.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. Knitting allows for the creation of flexible, stretchy fabric that can be shaped and stuffed to form the three-dimensional toy structure. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, indicating that knitters should have foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping techniques before beginning this project.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided content, intermediate knitting projects typically employ a combination of fundamental stitches to create the toy's body, head, and limbs. Knitters will likely use techniques such as increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the penguin's form, and may incorporate color changes to represent the penguin's natural black and white coloring.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for chunky weight yarn, which is a thicker yarn category that allows projects to work up quickly and creates a substantial, cuddly finished toy. Chunky yarn is ideal for toy making as it produces a dense fabric with good structure for stuffing. Knitters will also need appropriate knitting needles sized to work with chunky yarn, as well as fiberfill or similar stuffing material to fill the completed toy pieces before assembly.
Educational Context
The pattern includes informative content about African penguins, describing their habitat, behavior, and conservation status. African penguins are highly social seabirds that communicate through distinctive vocalizations resembling a donkey's bray. They are monogamous breeders that return to the same nesting locations annually. Unfortunately, the species is listed as endangered on the IUCN red list, with fewer than 40,000 individuals remaining in the wild—representing a dramatic decline from their population of over 400,000 in 1900. Creating this knitted toy can serve as a meaningful way to raise awareness about penguin conservation.

Great company.
Lovely pattern. It’s so very realistic. I can’t wait to get started. I’ve already had an order from my mum and sister in law. I’m always knitting for my 90 year old mother and this pattern is adorable.
