Adult Teddy Bear Appliqué Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
This is a crochet appliqué pattern for an adorable teddy bear design created by Kerri's Crochet. The finished appliqué can be sewn onto garments, blankets, bags, or other projects to add a charming decorative element. The pattern includes instructions for constructing the bear's head and body components that are worked separately and then assembled together using sewing thread and a needle.
Finished Sizes
- Large: 19cm x 13cm (7.5" x 5") when made with 8 ply wool
- Medium: 14cm x 9cm (5.5" x 3.5") when made with 4 ply crochet cotton
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental shaping techniques to create dimensional bear components. The pattern uses the magic loop method to begin circular sections, allowing for a tight center without a visible hole. Increases are worked by placing multiple stitches into the same stitch or chain space to expand the fabric outward, creating the rounded shapes characteristic of a teddy bear's head and body. The individual pieces are then sewn together using a needle and thread to form the complete appliqué.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): Foundation stitch used to create the base of rows and turning chains
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless circular sections
- Single Crochet (sc): Fundamental short stitch for creating fabric
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Medium-height stitch for varied texture and structure
- Double Crochet (dc): Taller stitch used extensively throughout the pattern for efficient fabric building
- Treble Crochet (tr): Extra-tall stitch available for specific shaping details
Materials Required
The pattern calls for 4 ply crochet cotton or wool yarn in 3 or 4 colors to create the teddy bear with distinct color sections (such as separate colors for the head, body, ears, and facial features). A 1.25mm crochet hook is recommended for working with 4 ply cotton to achieve proper gauge and finished sizing. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, sewing thread and a sewing needle for assembling the crocheted pieces together, and a darning needle for weaving in loose yarn ends to finish the appliqué neatly.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with basic stitches and shaping techniques. The magic loop method and increase techniques require some experience, though the straightforward stitch combinations and clear abbreviations make the pattern accessible to those ready to advance beyond beginner projects.
