Adult Cable Headband by Ardree Designs
What is Being Made
The Adult Cable Headband is a knitted accessory designed to fit an adult head circumference of 22-23 inches. This intermediate-level knitting project combines classic ribbed edging with a striking central cable panel, creating a warm and stylish headband suitable for everyday wear or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it ideal for knitters with intermediate experience. The headband begins and ends with ribbed knitting, a technique that creates an elastic, stretchy fabric perfect for a fitted headband. The central section features cable knitting, a decorative technique where stitches are crossed over one another to create a twisted, rope-like texture. The cable crossing is accomplished using a cable needle, a specialized tool that temporarily holds stitches while others are worked in front of or behind them, creating the dimensional twisted effect that defines cable knit designs.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
- Purl stitch (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and pattern definition
- K2, P2 rib – an alternating knit-purl pattern that creates the elastic ribbed sections at both ends of the headband
- C6B (Cable 6 Back) – a cable cross technique where 3 stitches are placed on a cable needle and held to the back of the work, then 3 stitches are knitted from the left needle, followed by knitting the 3 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cable twist.
Materials and Tools
The Adult Cable Headband requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. You will need 25 grams of DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits to a standard tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches). The project calls for one pair of 3.25 mm (US size 3, UK size 10) single point knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for DK yarn and provide the correct gauge for the finished piece. Additionally, a 3.25 mm cable needle is essential for executing the cable crosses in the central panel. A blunt yarn needle is used for the finishing work, including drawing the cast-on and cast-off edges together and weaving in all yarn ends for a polished final appearance.
Pattern Structure and Finished Dimensions
The headband is constructed in three distinct sections. The first section is a 15-centimeter ribbed cuff worked in K2, P2 rib. The central panel follows, featuring an 8-row repeat pattern that combines ribbing on the sides with a 6-stitch cable in the center. This central panel repeat is worked seven times, followed by rows 1 through 4 of the pattern one additional time. The final section mirrors the opening, with another 15-centimeter ribbed cuff in K2, P2 rib. The finished headband is designed to fit a standard adult head circumference of 22 to 23 inches.
