Product Description
Vintage details and a modern silhouette make this girly cardigan a great new project to cast on.
Body is knit from the bottom up, with a high, ribbed bottom border and knit-in pockets. Then, a lovely and easy lace pattern in introduced, which only consists of yarnovers and basic decrease techniques in a very repetitive design.
Fronts and back are split at the underarm and completed to the shoulders separately with neckline shaping and short rows for shoulder shaping. Shoulders are joined using a 3-needle bind off.
Blousy sleeves are then picked up and knit in the same lace stitch pattern down to the gathered cuffs.
Knits up beautifully in a dk-weight yarn. Shown here in a heathered grey wool and alpaca mix with lots of softness and stitch definition.
Easy-to-learn lace is both charted and written out.
Emilia Cardigan #322 by SweaterBabe.com
What is Being Made
The Emilia Cardigan is a women's girly cardigan that combines vintage aesthetic details with a modern, flattering silhouette. This downloadable knitting pattern from SweaterBabe.com creates a sophisticated layering piece suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a project with both classic and contemporary appeal.
Construction Method and Techniques
The Emilia Cardigan employs a bottom-up knitting construction method that builds the garment in strategic sections for optimal shaping and fit.
- Body Construction: The main body is knit from the bottom up, beginning with a high ribbed bottom border that provides structure and definition to the lower edge
- Pocket Integration: Knit-in pockets are incorporated directly into the body during construction, eliminating the need for separate seaming
- Lace Pattern: A lovely and easy lace stitch pattern is introduced above the ribbed border, creating visual interest and texture throughout the body and sleeves
- Lace Techniques: The lace pattern consists of basic yarnovers and decrease techniques arranged in a very repetitive design, making it accessible for intermediate-level knitters despite the delicate appearance
- Shoulder Shaping: Fronts and back pieces are split at the underarm and completed separately to the shoulders, allowing for precise neckline shaping and short-row shoulder shaping for a well-fitted garment
- Shoulder Joining: Shoulders are joined using a professional 3-needle bind off technique, creating a strong and neat seam
- Sleeve Construction: Blousy sleeves are picked up from the armhole and knit downward in the same lace stitch pattern, creating visual continuity throughout the cardigan
- Cuff Finishing: Sleeves taper to gathered cuffs that provide a refined, finished appearance
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Emilia Cardigan features a combination of fundamental and decorative knitting stitches. The ribbed bottom border and cuffs utilize ribbing, a classic stitch that provides elasticity and structure. The primary design element is a lace stitch pattern composed of yarnovers and basic decreases (such as knit two together or slip-slip-knit), arranged in a highly repetitive sequence that is easy to memorize and work once established. This straightforward lace construction makes the pattern approachable for intermediate knitters while delivering sophisticated visual results.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Emilia Cardigan is designed to knit beautifully in dk-weight yarn, a versatile yarn weight that offers excellent stitch definition and drape. The pattern is shown in a heathered grey wool and alpaca blend, a natural fiber combination that provides softness, warmth, and beautiful stitch clarity. The wool and alpaca mix contributes to the garment's luxurious feel and the stitch definition necessary to showcase the lace pattern effectively.
