Product Description

Time to update your everyday V-neck cardigan with this cabled beauty! Knit it in a worsted-weight alpaca blend, as shown, for the softness and drape you'll want to reach for every time. The yarn is also lovely to knit!

The back and fronts are knit from the bottom up starting with a neat ribbed border. The ribbing transitions into the easy-to-work cable panels that travel all the way up to the shoulders, which are shaped with short rows. A bit of ribbing at each end adds a sporty touch.

Shoulders are joined using a three-needle bind off. Then, the sleeves are picked up and knit down to the cuffs in Stockinette stitch and finished with the same ribbed edge as the body.

The front ribbed buttonbands are picked up and knit.

The sides are seamed, leaving a split hem. Nice, deep pockets are knit in.

Maelynn Cardigan #283 by SweaterBabe.com

Project Overview

The Maelynn Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitted V-neck cardigan designed to elevate everyday wear with elegant cable detailing. This downloadable PDF pattern from SweaterBabe.com features a classic construction method combined with decorative cable panels that run vertically from hem to shoulder, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment.

What Is Being Made

This is a fitted V-neck cardigan suitable for everyday layering and casual wear. The design emphasizes vertical cable panels as the primary design feature, with ribbed edging at the hem, cuffs, and front bands providing structure and a sporty aesthetic. The cardigan is constructed to be worn comfortably over other garments.

Construction Techniques

The Maelynn Cardigan employs a bottom-up construction method, beginning with the body pieces and progressing to the sleeves and finishing details. This approach allows knitters to try on the garment as it develops and make adjustments to length as needed.

  • Body Construction: The back and front panels are knit from the bottom up, starting with a neat ribbed border that transitions into cable panels. These cable panels travel the full length from hem to shoulders, creating the signature visual design of the cardigan.
  • Shoulder Shaping: Short rows are used to shape the shoulders, allowing for a fitted shoulder line that follows the natural contours of the body.
  • Shoulder Joining: A three-needle bind off technique joins the shoulders, creating a secure and professional seam.
  • Sleeve Construction: Sleeves are picked up from the armhole and knit downward (top-down) to the cuffs, worked primarily in Stockinette stitch for a smooth, classic appearance. The sleeves are finished with the same ribbed edge used on the body for design cohesion.
  • Front Bands: Ribbed buttonbands are picked up along the front edges and knit to create neat, finished openings for buttons.

Stitches Used

This pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with decorative cable work:

  • Ribbing: Used at the hem, cuffs, and front buttonbands to create elastic edges that hold the garment close to the body and add a sporty, finished appearance.
  • Cable Panels: Decorative twisted stitches that form the primary design feature, traveling vertically up the back and front of the cardigan. Cable work requires crossing groups of stitches over one another to create dimensional, rope-like textures.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The smooth, classic stitch used for the sleeves and body sections between cable panels, providing a clean canvas that allows the cables to stand out visually.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Maelynn Cardigan is designed for worsted-weight yarn, a medium-weight category that knits at a standard gauge suitable for everyday garments. The pattern recommends knitting the cardigan in a worsted-weight alpaca blend, as shown in the sample garment. Alpaca blends offer exceptional softness and beautiful drape, making them particularly pleasant to knit and wear. The yarn choice directly impacts the final feel and movement of the finished cardigan, with alpaca blends providing a luxurious hand and fluid silhouette that encourages reaching for this piece regularly.

Knitters will need appropriate needles for worsted-weight yarn (typically US 7-9 depending on desired gauge) and a crochet hook for picking up stitches along the armholes and front edges. Buttons are required for the front closure, with the quantity determined by the desired button spacing along the front bands.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable stitches and manage multiple construction techniques. The pattern requires comfort with reading knitting charts or written cable instructions, picking up stitches, and executing short-row shaping for shoulders. Experienced beginners who have completed several projects successfully may also find this pattern achievable with careful attention to instructions.
