Product Description
I find that hats are like potato chips, and it's hard to stop after just one. 2 Glasses of Pink Zin is for those of you who want another after finishing the first. Both are delicate and feminine, as that's what the pink was begging for.
The first glass is a cozy cabled hat. It can be worn deep with a little slouch, or fold the brim back and wear it like a traditional cap. The cables are intricate and varied, and the crown is fun to work as the cables decrease into the twisted ribs.
The second uses the slipped stitch motif from my Silver Gin Fizz. This time it's worked sparingly, in offset ribs. This hat has a delicate brim and a slouchy fit, with a cool detail in the crown when that last slipped stitch disappears.
It's easy to alter either hat for depth, and you can adjust the ribbing to be wider or narrower. The slipped stitch hat can be knit to almost any width by changing the amount of repeats.
Sample is in Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted. Suggested substitutes are shown below.
2 Glasses of Pink Zin: Knitted Hat Pair by BabyCocktails
Project Overview
2 Glasses of Pink Zin is a downloadable knitting pattern featuring two coordinating hat designs created by designer Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This intermediate-level pattern set allows knitters to create a matching pair of hats using worsted weight yarn, offering two distinct construction methods and styling options within a single design.
The First Glass: Cabled Slouch Hat
The First Glass is a cozy cabled hat designed with versatility in mind. The hat can be worn in multiple ways: deep and flat with a slight slouch for a relaxed aesthetic, or with the brim folded up to create a more fitted, traditional cap silhouette. This styling flexibility makes it adaptable to different preferences and occasions.
Cable Construction and Techniques: The hat features intricate and varied cables throughout the design to maintain visual interest during knitting. The crown shaping employs a creative technique where small cables function as decorative "seams" into which other cables are decreased. This approach combines structural shaping with decorative cable work, creating a sophisticated finish at the crown.
The Second Glass: Slipped Stitch Slouch Hat
The Second Glass showcases a different construction approach with a narrower brim and slouchy fit. This design incorporates slipped stitch motifs used sparingly throughout offset ribs, creating subtle texture and visual detail without overwhelming the hat's silhouette.
Slipped Stitch Details: The slipped stitch technique is borrowed from the designer's earlier Gin Fizz pattern but applied more minimally in this design. The decreases follow more traditional shaping methods, with a final slipped stitch detail that creates a distinctive visual element as the rib pattern concludes at the crown.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted yarn, shown in the colorway Plie. Primo is a worsted weight yarn suitable for intermediate knitters working on hat-scale projects. The two-skein requirement allows knitters to complete both hat designs using complementary or identical yarn.
Skill Level and Techniques
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable stitches and slipped stitch techniques. The pattern teaches and reinforces multiple knitting techniques across the two designs:
- Cable knitting and cable decreasing
- Slipped stitch motifs and texture work
- Crown shaping and decrease techniques
- Ribbed stitch construction
- Hat finishing and brim options
Design Philosophy
The pattern reflects the designer's philosophy that hats are "a little like potato chips" – easy to want to make multiple versions of. The two designs within this single pattern offer knitters the opportunity to explore different techniques and aesthetics while working with the same yarn, creating a coordinated pair suitable for gifting or personal collection building.
