1/12th Scale Baby Pram Set by Frances Powell

Project Overview

This is an advanced knitting pattern designed to create a complete miniature baby pram set suitable for dolls house dolls measuring 2 inches to 2½ inches (5 to 6 cm) tall. The set is styled after authentic 1940s baby wear, circa 1945-1948, and comprises three coordinated pieces: heelless leggings, a matinee jacket, and a decorative helmet. This pattern is specifically recommended for experienced knitters only and is not suitable as an introduction to miniature knitting.

What Is Being Made

The complete pram set includes three essential garment pieces for miniature dolls:

  • Heelless Leggings – Approximately 1½ inches tall, these form-fitting leg coverings are designed without a heel construction, typical of vintage baby wear
  • Matinee Jacket – A small cardigan-style jacket approximately 1½ inches tall and ¾ inches across the chest, featuring button or bead closures
  • Helmet – A decorative bonnet-style head covering with a small button or bead for securing the neck strap

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced miniature knitting project employs fundamental knitting stitches adapted for extremely fine gauge work. The primary stitches used include:

  • Knit stitch (k) – The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – Purl stitches are incorporated to create texture and pattern variation
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – This decrease stitch is used for shaping and reducing stitch counts where needed

The pattern uses standard abbreviations and repeat instructions indicated by parentheses. Shaping techniques are employed throughout to achieve the precise proportions required for dolls house scale garments. Gauge is noted as non-critical due to natural variation in dolls house doll sizes, allowing knitters flexibility in achieving proper fit.

Materials Required

Yarn: The complete set requires 55 yards (50 metres) of 1-ply wool in cobweb weight. This ultra-fine yarn weight is essential for creating garments at 1/12th scale. Individual component requirements are as follows: heelless leggings need 28 yards (25 metres), the matinee jacket requires 28 yards (25 metres), and the helmet uses 14 yards (12.5 metres).

Needles: Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles are specified for standard dolls house dolls. The pattern notes that size 21 needles should be used when knitting for Heidi Ott baby dolls, which are slightly smaller.

Notions: The set requires small finishing embellishments including 2 small buttons or beads for the matinee jacket closure, 1 small button or bead for the helmet neck strap, and a small length of 2mm ribbon for the leggings waist.

Skill Level and Suitability

This pattern is designated as advanced difficulty and is explicitly recommended for experienced knitters. The combination of cobweb-weight yarn, ultra-fine needles, and miniature scale construction demands substantial technical skill and patience. The pattern creator emphasizes that this is not an appropriate first project for anyone attempting miniature knitting for the first time.
