1:12th Scale Ladies Baby Doll Nightdress by Frances Powell

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates a miniature 1960s-style ladies baby doll nightdress designed to fit 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls house dolls at 1:12th scale. The pattern also includes matching panties. The finished nightdress measures approximately 2½ inches (6.25 cm) at its widest point and 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length, making it an authentic miniature garment suitable for period dolls house displays and collections.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques adapted for ultra-fine-scale work. The pattern uses straightforward construction methods appropriate for miniature garment making, where precision and attention to detail are essential. Knitters will work with extremely fine materials and needles, requiring steady hands and careful stitch management throughout the project.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): The primary stitch used throughout the nightdress and panties, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the classic smooth fabric texture
  • Knit stitch: Basic knit stitches form the foundation of all rows
  • Purl stitch: Alternated with knit stitches to create the stocking stitch fabric
  • Yarn over (yrn): Used for creating decorative details and shaping elements within the garment

Materials and Tools

The nightdress requires size 19 (1 mm/US size 0) knitting needles and 55 yards (50 metres) of 1-ply wool or cotton yarn in cobweb weight—an exceptionally fine yarn weight necessary for creating properly proportioned miniature garments. The yarn quantity is sufficient to complete both the nightdress and matching panties. The panties pattern requires the same needle size and an additional 6 yards (5.5 metres) of 1-ply wool, with optional elastic for securing the waistband.

Pattern Details and Sizing

The nightdress finished dimensions are 2½ inches (6.25 cm) at the widest point by 3 inches (7.5 cm) long. The matching panties measure 1¼ inches (2.75 cm) at the waist, ¾ inch (2 cm) at the base of each leg, and ¾ inch (2 cm) in total height, designed to fit snugly at the hips of the doll. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical for dolls house dolls, as these miniatures vary in size and proportions just as human dolls do, allowing knitters flexibility in achieving a proper fit for their specific doll.
