1:12th Scale Girls School Uniform (c.1950-1970s) Knitting Pattern

Project Overview

This advanced knitting pattern by Frances Powell creates an authentic miniature girls school uniform ensemble designed for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls approximately 4 inches (10 cm) tall. The pattern captures the classic styling of mid-twentieth century schoolwear, featuring separates that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfit combinations. The collection includes a v-neck cardigan, short-sleeved jumper, and a pinafore or skirt option, allowing customization based on preference and historical accuracy.

Garments Included

V-Neck Cardigan

The v-neck cardigan serves as a versatile layering piece in this school uniform ensemble. This fitted garment features a classic v-neckline and includes three small beads for button closures down the front. The cardigan measures approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) at the waist and 1¼ inches (3.5 cm) from neck to waist, with sleeve length of 1¼ inches (3.5 cm). The structured fit and tailored proportions reflect authentic 1950s-1970s schoolwear design.

Short-Sleeved Jumper

The short-sleeved jumper provides a classic base layer for the uniform. This pullover-style garment measures 1 inch (2.5 cm) at the waist and 1¼ inches (3.5 cm) from neck to waist, offering a neat, fitted silhouette appropriate to the period. The short sleeves and simple construction make this piece an essential component of the school uniform wardrobe.

Pinafore or Skirt

The pattern offers flexibility with a pinafore dress option or a standalone skirt. The pinafore measures 1½ inches (4 cm) across the hem and 2 inches (5 cm) from shoulder to hem, with a ¾-inch (2 cm) waist. It features two small buttons or beads at the shoulders for authentic period detailing. Alternatively, knitters can work the skirt alone, which measures 1½ inches (4 cm) across the hem and 1¼ inches (3 cm) from waist to hem, also with a ¾-inch (2 cm) waist. This option allows crafters to choose between a traditional pinafore dress or a separate skirt worn over the jumper.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced-level pattern requires proficiency with fine-gauge knitting techniques suitable for miniature garment construction. The pattern employs standard knitting stitches and shaping methods to create properly proportioned dolls house clothing. Techniques include increases and decreases for shaping the fitted bodice and waist, as well as methods for creating neat armholes and necklines. The construction of button bands and shoulder seams demonstrates intermediate to advanced finishing skills.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Each garment in this collection requires size 19 (1.00 mm) knitting needles, which are extremely fine and designed specifically for delicate, miniature work. The yarn weight specified is cobweb, an ultra-fine 1-ply yarn that creates the appropriate scale and drape for 1:12th scale dolls. Each individual garment requires approximately 25 metres (28 yards) of 1-ply yarn. The cardigan and pinafore require small embellishments: the cardigan uses 3 small beads for buttons, while the pinafore requires 2 small buttons or beads for the shoulder closures.

I m always searching for sewing and knitting for 1/12 scale dolls clothes p

I am very pleased with the finished uniform I did the cardigan and the gym slip but I didn’t think a knitted jumper worked for school ware so I made a short sleeved blouse instead so the little jumper will be knitted for another doll So yes I’m very pleased 👍
