Zweigart By the Sea – Free Downloadable Cross Stitch & Embroidery PDF Pattern

By the Sea is a charming, beach-inspired embroidery design from Zweigart, one of the most trusted names in needlework fabrics since 1877. Released as a free downloadable PDF, this pattern is ideal for beginner embroiderers looking to create a decorative piece celebrating coastal living, complete with the uplifting sentiment "Life is better at the beach."

About the Design

The By the Sea pattern captures a relaxed, nautical aesthetic perfectly suited for home décor, framed artwork, or gifting. Its cheerful seaside theme and manageable stitch count make it an approachable project for those new to embroidery or cross stitch, while still offering enough detail to satisfy more experienced stitchers. The design incorporates a small but varied palette of thread colors, giving the finished piece a lively, summery feel.

Techniques Used

This pattern uses three classic hand embroidery techniques, each of which adds a distinct visual quality to the finished work:

  • Satin Stitch (Plattstich / Passé Plat): Smooth, closely packed parallel stitches used to fill areas with solid, lustrous color. This technique creates a polished, almost painted appearance and is commonly used for filling motifs such as shells, waves, or lettering elements.
  • Back Stitch (Rückstich / Point Arrière): A versatile outline stitch that creates clean, continuous lines. Back stitch is used here to define edges, add fine detail, and create crisp lettering or borders within the design.
  • French Knot (Knötchenstich / Point de Nœud): A raised, textured stitch formed by wrapping thread around the needle before inserting it back into the fabric. French knots add delightful three-dimensional detail and are often used to suggest texture, dots, or decorative accents.

Recommended Fabrics

Zweigart provides this pattern with compatibility across several of their signature evenweave and linen needlework fabrics, giving stitchers flexibility in their choice of ground cloth. Each fabric produces a slightly different finished size and texture:

  • Zweigart Lugana 3835 – 25 count (100 threads per 10 cm), composed of 52% cotton and 48% viscose/Modal. Available in color shades including 954, 566, 264, and others. Lugana is a popular choice for its smooth drape and ease of stitching.
  • Zweigart Murano 3984 – 32 count (126 threads per 10 cm), also 52% cotton and 48% viscose/Modal. Available in shades including 100, 4269 (vintage), 503. Murano's finer count produces a more detailed, refined finish.
  • Zweigart Brittney 3270 – 28 count (112 threads per 10 cm), 52% cotton and 48% viscose/Modal. Available in shades including 589, 550, 100. Brittney is a versatile mid-count fabric well suited to both cross stitch and embroidery.
  • Zweigart Belfast 3609 – 32 count (126 threads per 10 cm), made from 100% linen. Available in shades including 5139 (vintage), 4115, 52. Belfast linen offers a natural, heirloom-quality texture with excellent durability.
