Product Description

A simple fun pattern to work on new techniques and garments on the new Universal X Loom designed by me and modified and made by Cindwood Looms. It has video instructions along with written and some photo instructions. It will soon have a collaborated bodice pattern to go with it but for now you can easily make a skirt using the basis of this pattern for a child to adult. I give a formula to configure this concept out. You will need the larger size x loom to make this pattern. Please feel free to ask questions.

X Loom Skirt by Scarlett Royale

Project Overview

The X Loom Skirt is an intermediate-level knitted skirt design created by independent designer Scarlett Royale. This downloadable PDF pattern uses loom knitting techniques to construct a finished garment, offering an accessible alternative to traditional needle knitting while maintaining classic skirt shaping and structure.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a complete skirt using the flat knit method on a circular loom. The design incorporates strategic decreases to create a fitted silhouette, making it suitable for various body types and sizing options through loom selection and yarn weight adjustments.

Loom and Equipment

The X Loom Skirt is worked on a 160 peg 3/8" gauge Universal X Loom, a large circular loom designed for substantial projects. Essential tools include a looming hook for manipulating stitches and a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in yarn ends. Stitch holders or stitch markers help manage active stitches during construction.

Yarn Requirements and Materials

This pattern calls for approximately 600 yards of yarn in aran weight (also compatible with DK to worsted weight yarns). Aran weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition on the large loom pegs while creating a fabric with good drape suitable for skirt construction. The yardage requirement accommodates the full circumference and length needed for a complete garment.

Primary Loom Knitting Techniques

  • Flat Knit: The foundational technique involving tossing the bottom loop over the top loop on each peg to create new stitches and advance rows
  • Purl (P): Executed by pulling the working yarn from the bottom of the stitch through to the top, removing the existing stitch, and placing the new stitch on the peg—used for textural variation or reverse stockinette sections
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A decrease technique where two loops are tossed over the top working strand, reducing stitch count and creating shaping
  • Wedge Decrease (WD): A specialized decrease method that moves the wedge down one notch, transfers stitches to wedge pegs on each side, and systematically knits stitches together to create gradual, even decreases for fitted shaping
  • Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique that secures the final row of stitches, preventing unraveling and completing the skirt edge

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic loom knitting operations including casting on, the flat knit stitch, and simple decreases. The wedge decrease technique and overall garment construction require moderate skill development, making this pattern ideal for loom knitters ready to advance beyond beginner projects.

Pattern Format

The X Loom Skirt is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access instructions digitally and print them as needed. The pattern includes detailed terminology definitions and references instructional video content to support visual learners working through the loom knitting techniques.
