Product Description
I was thinking of shortie socks as the season is trying to change, and thought a nice peek of lace would be a beautiful way to show off a shortie sock. Windflower is a delicate wildflower that grows close to the ground, which is what this sock is to me, a delicate lace short sock. Autumn and Indigo dyes such beautiful and soft colors that pair so well with the new growth of the spring season. Any of her colors you choose for these socks would be a wonderful pairing.
This is a top down sock with a traditional heel flap. It is worked using magic loop; needle 1 will be the front of the foot/cuff and needle 2 will be the back of the foot/cuff and heel.
Sample yarn used is Autumn and Indigo Classic Sock in colorway Cane.
Needles used are US #0/2.00mm and US #1/2.25mm 32" circular for sizes 1,3,4. Needles used for size 2 are US #1.2.25mm and US #1.5/2.5mm 32" circular.
Windflower Socks by Shannon Larson
Project Overview
Windflower Socks is a beginner-friendly knitted sock pattern designed by Shannon Larson of Justlivin Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern features delicate lace detailing inspired by the windflower, a low-growing wildflower that blooms during seasonal transitions. The design incorporates lace as a focal point on shortie socks, creating an elegant peek of openwork that celebrates the shift from winter to spring.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of shortie socks—shorter-length socks that showcase decorative lace detailing. The windflower motif serves as the primary design element, bringing a delicate, nature-inspired aesthetic to everyday legwear. The socks are worked in the round using circular needles, a standard construction method for sock knitting.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Windflower Socks pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner knitters:
- Circular knitting: Socks are constructed in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating seamless, tubular fabric
- Lace knitting: The pattern incorporates openwork stitches to create the delicate windflower design
- Gauge adjustment: The pattern provides multiple needle size options to help knitters achieve proper gauge and fit
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and techniques, including:
- BOR (beginning of round)—marking the start of each circular row
- yo (yarn over)—creating deliberate holes and openwork in the lace pattern
- sl2 (slip 2 stitches together knitwise)—a decrease technique used in lace construction
- p2sso (pass 2 slipped stitches over)—completing the decrease and shaping the lace motif
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Windflower Socks pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, a standard choice for sock knitting that creates durable, well-fitting garments. The sample sock was knitted using 40 grams of Autumn and Indigo Fibers Classic Sock yarn in the Cane colorway, which provides 463 yards per 100 grams. This yardage is typical for fingering weight sock yarn and allows for complete sock construction.
Needles and Tools
The pattern accommodates different needle preferences and sizing needs:
- US #1/2.25mm circular needle (32 inches or longer)—the primary needle size used in the sample
- US #0/2.00mm circular needle (32 inches or longer)—one size smaller for achieving tighter gauge
- US #1.5/2.50mm circular needle (32 inches or longer)—one size larger for looser gauge
- Darning needle—for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
All circular needles should measure 32 inches or longer to accommodate the stitches needed for sock circumference while working in the round.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to sock construction or lace knitting. The straightforward techniques and clear abbreviations support skill development without overwhelming complexity.
