Product Description

Waterfall socks are worked from the cuff down, they’re both the same (they differ in the direction of crossing the stitches of the cables, as indicated in the symbols). You can use any sock yarn with a yarn length of 350 – 420 m 380 – 460 yds / 100 g. Needles: size 2.5 mm / US 1½ circular needles, at least 80 cm / 32” long (or suitable size to obtain the gauge). These socks are knitted using the “magic loop” method.

Waterfall Socks by Maryna Radzko

What is Being Made

Waterfall Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by Maryna Radzko. These socks are worked from the cuff down and feature a cable stitch design that creates a waterfall-like visual effect. The pattern includes instructions for creating two socks that are structurally identical, with the primary difference being the direction in which the cable stitches cross, allowing for a mirrored pair.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The socks are constructed using the cuff-down method, a popular approach for sock knitting that begins at the top and works toward the toe. The pattern utilizes the magic loop technique, a method for knitting small circumference projects on a single circular needle by creating a loop with the cable. However, the instructions are also compatible with double-pointed needles if you prefer that traditional approach. The pattern references stitches worked on two separate needles (Needle 1 and Needle 2), each representing approximately half of the total stitch count.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Waterfall Socks pattern features cable stitches as the primary decorative element. These cables are worked with directional crossing, meaning the stitches cross in opposite directions on each sock to create a mirrored pair. The base fabric is worked in Stockinette Stitch, which provides a smooth, classic background for the cable design. The gauge for this pattern is 28 stitches and 39 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in Stockinette Stitch, measured after blocking, which is typical for 4-ply sock yarn.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Waterfall Socks pattern calls for 4-ply sock yarn with a yardage requirement of 350–420 meters (380–460 yards) per 100 grams. The original design was knitted using Drops Nord Uni sock yarn in a color of your choice. This yarn is a premium blend containing 45% alpaca, 25% wool, and 30% polyamide, offering softness, warmth, and durability. You will need approximately 2 skeins of this yarn to complete both socks.

Needles and Equipment

  • Circular needles: Size 2.5 mm / US 1½, at least 80 cm (32 inches) long, or an appropriate size to achieve the specified gauge
  • Cable needle: For crossing stitches in the cable pattern
  • Stitch markers: To mark pattern repeats and construction points
  • Tapestry needle: For weaving in yarn ends and finishing
  • Row counter: To track progress through pattern rows

Pattern Notes

This is an intermediate-level pattern suitable for knitters with experience in cable work and sock construction. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF for personal, non-commercial use only. The copyright is held by Maryna Radzko, dated 2020. Knitters should block their finished socks to achieve the specified gauge and to help the cables and stockinette stitch settle into their final appearance.
