Trellis Fan Table Runner Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The Trellis Fan is a beginner-friendly crochet table runner designed by Made By Lilian. This downloadable PDF pattern creates an elegant, openwork table setting piece that measures 12 inches wide by 35 inches long in its finished dimensions. The design features a distinctive fan stitch motif arranged in a trellis formation, making it an ideal project for crafters new to decorative crochet techniques who want to create a professional-looking home accessory.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a flat table runner suitable for table settings and home décor. The runner is worked in rows from end to end, creating a rectangular piece with an open, lacy construction. The trellis pattern provides visual interest while maintaining the beginner skill level, and the finished piece can be customized in width and length by adjusting stitch multiples according to the pattern guidelines.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Trellis Fan employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The piece is worked flat in rows, requiring the crafter to turn at the end of each row. The primary construction method uses basic stitches combined to create an open, geometric pattern. The special fan stitch is the signature element, which is consistently placed within chain-3 spaces from the previous round, creating the distinctive fan motif that gives the pattern its name.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Single Crochet (sc) – Used as anchor stitches throughout the pattern to create structure and definition
- Double Crochet (dc) – Forms the main body of the fan stitch elements
- Triple Crochet (tr) – Included in the stitch repertoire for pattern variation and texture
- Chain (ch) – Creates the open spaces and spacing between stitches that define the trellis appearance
- Skip (skp) – Used to create the openwork sections by skipping specified chains or stitches
- Space (sp) – Refers to the gaps created by chain stitches, particularly the chain-3 spaces where fan stitches are placed
- Fan Special Stitch – The signature stitch defined as {(1dc, ch1) 4 times, 1dc} worked in the same stitch or space, creating a fan-shaped motif with five double crochets separated by chain-1 spaces
Materials Required
The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn, with each skein containing 187 yards. The second skein is only partially used, so crafters may have leftover yarn. The cotton yarn in worsted weight provides a crisp drape ideal for a table runner, with good stitch definition that showcases the fan and trellis pattern work.
Additional materials include a 4mm crochet hook (G size), a needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and 8-12 beads for tassels, which add a decorative finishing touch to the completed runner.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches by 19 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch square (10 cm by 10 cm). Maintaining proper gauge is important for achieving the intended finished dimensions of 12 inches wide by 35 inches long. The pattern notes that crafters can customize both the width and length by adjusting stitch multiples, allowing for personalization based on individual table dimensions or design preferences.
Pattern Construction
The Trellis Fan begins with a foundation chain of 62 stitches, calculated as multiples of 10 plus 2. The pattern uses a repeating sequence across rows that alternates single crochet anchor stitches with chain-3 spaces and skip stitches, creating the open trellis framework. The fan stitch is consistently placed within the chain-3 spaces from the previous row, building the dimensional fan motifs that define the pattern's visual character. This structured approach makes the pattern easy to follow for beginners while producing sophisticated-looking results.
