The Winterlace Scarf by Colleen Webster
What is Being Made
The Winterlace Scarf is a rectangular crocheted accessory measuring 42 inches long by 12 inches wide, with a total circumference of 84 inches when worn. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a sophisticated winter accessory featuring a knit-like appearance with decorative lace elements and color blocking.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several foundational and intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The design utilizes Foundation Half Double Crochet (FHDC), a method that allows you to create your foundation and first row simultaneously, eliminating the need for a traditional chain foundation. The pattern also incorporates work into the third loop of Half Double Crochet stitches, a technique that creates texture and dimension by working into a specific loop on the back of previous stitches rather than the standard front and back loops. Additionally, the scarf features V-stitch construction, where double crochets separated by chain spaces create the characteristic lace-like pattern visible on the right side of the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) – the fundamental crochet stitch used for spacing and creating openwork
- Foundation Half Double Crochet (FHDC) – combines foundation chain and first row into a single step
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – a medium-height stitch that forms the base structure
- Single Crochet (SC) – a short, tight stitch used for shaping and finishing
- Double Crochet (DC) – a taller stitch used in the V-stitch pattern repeats
- Slip Stitch (Sl St) – used for joining and seamless transitions
- V-Stitch (VST) – a decorative stitch pattern consisting of Double Crochet, Chain 2, Double Crochet in the same stitch, creating the lace effect
Materials Required
This project requires 845 yards total of worsted weight (4) yarn, divided into two colors. The designer used Patons Canadiana or a similar worsted weight yarn, with approximately 750 yards in Colour A (burgundy in the designer's version) for the main body and approximately 95 yards in Colour B (gray in the designer's version) for accent details and lace elements. You will also need an L hook (8mm) for working with this yarn weight and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 inches equals 11.5 stitches by 15 rows in pattern rows 5–8, which helps ensure your finished scarf matches the intended dimensions. Checking gauge before beginning is recommended for intermediate crocheters to achieve accurate finished measurements.
