Product Description
I have wanted to knit my daughter a dress for a while, and based this dress of a commercially made item that is now in its second year of use due to the clever straps - crisscrossed the first year with a longer skirt and now straight in the second year with a shorter skirt. I wanted to design something that was lightweight, airy, cute, but completely wearable - for more than one year, hence The Two Summer Sundress.
The best part? Start to finish, it only took me about three hours. I am not a big-time sewing gal either. I honestly think that this could be done without a machine (although the machine would make it easier).

The Two Summer Sundress by Natalie Larson
Project Overview
The Two Summer Sundress is a knitted children's dress designed by Natalie Larson that combines style with practical versatility. Inspired by a commercially made garment, this dress features innovative adjustable straps that can be worn crisscrossed or straight, allowing the piece to transition through multiple seasons and growth stages. The designer created this project with the goal of producing a lightweight, airy, and cute garment that remains completely wearable for active children. Remarkably, this dress can be completed from start to finish in approximately three hours, making it an efficient project for knitters of varying experience levels.
Design Features and Construction
The Two Summer Sundress showcases thoughtful design elements that extend its wearability and appeal. The crisscrossed strap option provides a charming aesthetic while the straight strap variation offers a more classic silhouette. The dress is engineered to work with a longer skirt length in its first configuration and a shorter skirt length in its second configuration, allowing the same garment to adapt as children grow. This dual-configuration approach maximizes the value and longevity of the finished piece. The designer notes that while a sewing machine facilitates construction, the finishing work can be accomplished without one, making this project accessible to knitters who prefer to avoid machine sewing.
Sizing Information
The Two Summer Sundress is available in multiple child sizes to accommodate various ages and measurements. The sizing chart is based on yarnstandards.com childsize guidelines and includes the following options:
- Child's Size 3-6 Months with 16" chest measurement
- Child's Size 6-9 Months with 17" chest measurement
- Child's Size 12 Months with 18" chest measurement
- Child's Size 18 Months with 19" chest measurement
- Child's Size 2 with 21" chest measurement
- Child's Size 3 with 22" chest measurement
- Child's Size 4 with 23" chest measurement
- Child's Size 6 and Child's Size 8 with additional measurements available
The designer recommends selecting one size larger than the child's current age or size to ensure proper fit and allow for growth, and suggests choosing the size that will best accommodate the individual child's measurements and development.
Knitting Techniques and Yarn Requirements
Craft and Difficulty Level: The Two Summer Sundress is an intermediate-level knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle projects with moderate complexity. The pattern uses worsted weight yarn, which is a versatile and commonly available yarn weight that works well for creating structured garments with good drape and durability.
Lightweight and Airy Construction: The dress is specifically engineered to be lightweight and airy, qualities that make it ideal for warm-weather wear. These characteristics are achieved through thoughtful yarn selection and stitch pattern choices that create fabric with excellent breathability while maintaining the structure needed for a wearable garment.
Pattern Format
The Two Summer Sundress is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing knitters to access the complete instructions immediately upon download. This format provides convenient access to sizing charts, stitch instructions, and construction guidance that can be referenced throughout the knitting and finishing process.
