Product Description

This cowl pattern was initially published as a mystery knitalong. It is still presented in mystery format, but in one full length pdf. It is instended to use up scrapsof yarn.

Here are the exact yardages and grams I used for each of the CCs in this project. Please be aware that this is for Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply yarn, and the yardage-to-grams ratio will be different for other yarns. Also, these balls of yarn were weighed completely dry (low humidity) and since kitchen scales are less accurate when weighing small amounts, your mileage (yardage) may vary:

• 12 yds (2 g) of CC1 (colorway Coral) • 16 yds (3 g) of CC2 (colorway Sweetpea) • 12 yds (2 g) of CC3 (colorway Ergosphere) • 28 yds (7 g) of CC4 (colorway Violaceous) • 32 yds (8 g) of CC5 (colorway Clematis) • 52 yds (13 g) of CC6 (colorway Franklin) • 30 yds (7.5 g) of CC7 (colorway Blue Parakeet) • 20 yds (5 g) of CC8 (colorway Dragon Claw) • 16 yds (3 g) of CC9 (colorway Duckfoot) • 12 yds (2 g) of CC10 (colorway Goldfinch)

The Great British Baking Cowl: Holiday Hangover Edition

Project Overview

The Great British Baking Cowl: Holiday Hangover Edition is a beginner-friendly mystery knit-a-long cowl designed by Mary Annarella. This downloadable knitting pattern is intended as a companion piece to the Great British Baking Shawl and offers knitters an enjoyable, accessible project perfect for using up leftover yarn scraps. The design creates a circular cowl that is knit mostly flat, making it an ideal pattern for crafters looking to minimize yarn waste while completing a practical, wearable accessory.

What You'll Create

This pattern produces a circular cowl—a versatile neckwear piece suitable for layering during cooler months. The cowl is constructed using a mystery knit-a-long format presented across three clues, adding an element of discovery and engagement to the knitting process. The finished piece combines a main color with contrasting color accents to create visual interest and texture.

Knitting Techniques

The cowl employs a clever construction method that allows the circular garment to be knit mostly flat, simplifying the process for knitters who may be less experienced with circular knitting. This approach makes the pattern accessible to beginners while maintaining design sophistication. The mystery knit-a-long format encourages knitters to follow sequential clues, building the pattern progressively and making the project engaging and interactive.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure, the most fundamental and widely-used knitting stitch. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture on the right side, making it ideal for showcasing color work and contrasting yarn colors.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is specifically designed for 4-ply yarn weight, commonly known as sock yarn or fingering-weight yarn. The project requires just over half a skein of sock yarn for the main color, with varying amounts of contrasting colors used throughout. This minimal yardage requirement makes the cowl an excellent stash-busting project for knitters with leftover yarn from other projects.

Essential materials include a Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches, selected to achieve proper gauge in stockinette stitch, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. The circular needle size may be adjusted based on individual gauge and yarn characteristics to ensure the finished cowl meets the intended dimensions and drape.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, this cowl is accessible to knitters new to the craft or those returning to knitting after a break. The straightforward stitch work, combined with the mystery knit-a-long format that provides clear guidance through three sequential clues, makes this pattern an encouraging choice for developing knitting skills while creating a finished, wearable garment.
