Product Description

Welcome to the gnome pullover! This pattern will be your perfect spring tapestry crochet project!

This pattern is written with slight positive ease which means that it is decently fitted. If you would like a looser fitting pullover, size up!

The finished bust measurements of the sweater are as follows per size:

XS: 33 inches S: 35 inches M: 39 inches L: 43 inches XL: 47 inches 2X:51 inches 3X: 55 inches 4X:59 inches 5X:63 inches

This pattern used tapestry crochet techniques. I strongly recommend that you create and use spools for the front of the pullover to avoid bulkiness or see-through-ness.

What is Being Made

The Gnome Pullover is an intermediate-level crochet sweater designed to be worked in four separate pieces and then seamed together. This pullover features a whimsical gnome character design incorporated into the garment, making it a playful and charming wearable project. The design includes detailed elements such as a gnome face with optional button eyes, a colored shirt, pants, and shoes, all created through strategic color changes and stitch work within the crochet construction.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This pattern employs a multi-piece construction approach, where the sweater body is worked in four distinct sections before being seamed together to create the finished garment. The design utilizes color changes throughout the project to create the gnome character details, requiring crocheters to work with multiple yarn colors strategically placed within the pattern. The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and includes stitch counts at the end of each row and round to help maintain proper gauge and shaping.

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Single Crochet (SC): The foundational stitch used throughout the majority of the sweater construction
  • Single Crochet Back Loop Only (SC BLO): Creates texture and definition in specific areas of the design
  • Chain (CH): Used for turning chains and foundational chains to begin sections
  • Bobble Stitch (BS): A special decorative stitch incorporated into the pattern for added texture and visual interest
  • Slip Stitch (Sl St): Used for joining rounds and seaming pieces together

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: DK weight yarn is used throughout this project, with a total yardage requirement ranging from 600 to 1500 yards depending on the desired finished size. The pattern calls for a main color yarn for the bulk of the sweater, supplemented by small quantities of accent colors: 25 yards each of red, yellow (or preferred shirt color), blue (or preferred pants color), white, skin tone yarn, and black (or preferred shoe color). This color palette allows for customization while maintaining the gnome character aesthetic.

Hook and Tools: A 5.0mm crochet hook (US size 8 or H hook) is required for working with DK weight yarn. Additional supplies include scissors for cutting yarn, a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the four pieces together, and optional small button eyes to enhance the gnome face details.

Pattern Features and Notes

The pattern includes clarification photos at the end of the document to assist crocheters with stitch definitions and construction techniques. Stitch counts are provided in parentheses at the end of each row and round, making it easy to verify proper stitch counts and catch any potential mistakes early in the project. The Bobble Stitch is defined within the pattern as a special stitch, and detailed instructions are provided to ensure crocheters can execute this decorative element correctly. The intermediate difficulty level makes this project suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-piece construction and color work.
