Product Description
If you’ve popped into a clothing store within the past several months, you’ve likely seen cute mini-backpacks in their accessory aisle. Claire has fallen in love with them so I decided that the next crocheted bag I made had to be a mini-backpack just for her.
> Pattern is written in standard US terms.
> Yarn Notes: Worsted weight cotton / 4 yarn was used for the sample shown. I used Lion Brand Yarn's 24/7 cotton. Approximately 360 yards total.
> One Size: 6.25″ W x 7.5″ H x 4.25″ D (does not include hanging loop or straps)
> This pattern includes several photo tutorials to help guide you along the way!
Mini-backpack design is an A Crocheted Simplicity original design.
Striped Mini-Backpack by Jennifer Renaud
What is Being Made
The Striped Mini-Backpack is a compact crochet backpack designed by Jennifer Renaud. This finished project measures 6.25 inches wide by 7.5 inches tall by 4.25 inches deep (not including the hanging loop), making it an ideal size for small essentials, accessories, or as a decorative piece. The backpack features a striped color pattern and includes a 9-inch white zipper closure for secure storage.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental construction techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern uses standard crochet methods to build the backpack structure, incorporating stitch markers to help track progress throughout the project. The design includes optional plastic canvas reinforcement pieces (two pieces measuring 4 inches wide by 6 inches long each) that can be inserted to add structure and stability to the finished bag if desired. The zipper is integrated into the design to create a functional closure.
Stitches Used
The primary stitches featured in this pattern include:
- Single Crochet (sc): The foundational stitch used throughout the project, worked at a gauge of 13 stitches plus 15.75 rows equaling 3 inches
- Inverse Single Crochet: A decorative or finishing stitch incorporated into the design
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining and shaping
- Chain Stitch (ch): Used for turning chains and foundational elements
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn (weight category 4). The sample was created using Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cotton, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn available in 3.5-ounce skeins containing 186 yards. The striped design requires multiple colors: White (300 yards) and Aqua (20 yards noted in the pattern). Any comparable worsted weight yarn may be substituted for the specified yarn.
Tools and Notions: A G/6/4.00mm crochet hook is required to achieve the specified gauge. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, four or more stitch markers for tracking stitches and rows, and a sewing needle with thread for attaching the zipper and any other finishing details.
Difficulty and Gauge Notes
Rated as an intermediate project, this backpack is suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable following pattern instructions with shaping and construction details. The gauge is critical for proper sizing: 13 stitches and 15.75 rows in single crochet should measure 3 inches. The designer notes that individual crochet tension varies; those who crochet more loosely may need to go down one or two hook sizes to achieve the correct gauge and finished dimensions.
