Project Overview

The Strata Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet design that creates a stunning triangular wrap measuring 60 inches in wingspan and 19 inches in depth. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for crocheters who have foundational skills and are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The shawl showcases beautiful color work through strategic yarn changes, resulting in distinct horizontal bands or "strata" that give the design its name.

Skill Level and Prerequisites

Designed as an intermediate project, the Strata Shawl requires solid knowledge of fundamental crochet techniques before beginning. Crocheters should be comfortable with slip stitches, double crochet stitches, and creating a Magic Ring to start the pattern. Additionally, the ability to work in the back loop only is essential, as this technique features prominently throughout the construction. While knowledge of working in the third loop is helpful for executing certain stitch variations, the pattern includes detailed explanations in the Special Stitches section to guide you through this technique.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used

The Strata Shawl employs a focused selection of crochet stitches to create its elegant structure:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – Used for foundation and turning chains
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – Creates joins and transitions between sections
  • Double crochet (dc) – The primary stitch forming the body of the shawl
  • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) – Used for decreasing and shaping
  • Back loop only (BLO) – A key technique worked throughout the pattern to create textural definition and the distinctive striped appearance
  • Magic Ring – The method for starting the shawl at its center point
  • Feather and fan (F&F) – A decorative stitch pattern that adds visual interest and lacy elements

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Strata Shawl requires approximately 690 yards of DK weight yarn (#3 weight classification). The sample shawl featured in the pattern uses Madelinetosh DK Twist, distributed across three coordinating colors: 350 yards in Color A (Coffee Grounds), 240 yards in Color B (Telegraph Wire), and 100 yards in Color C (Hosta Blue). This three-color combination creates the striking strata effect, though crocheters are encouraged to select their own color palette according to personal preference.

For those preferring a larger finished shawl, the pattern accommodates Worsted weight yarn as an alternative, which will increase the overall dimensions while maintaining the same stitch structure.

Tools and Notions

  • Size H/8 (5mm) Crochet Hook – The recommended hook size, though adjustments may be made based on individual gauge
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • 3 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points

Gauge Information

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 16 double crochet stitches equaling 4 inches in width, and 8 rows measuring just under 4 inches in height when using the Size H/8 hook with DK weight yarn. While gauge is noted as not critical for this particular project, the designer recommends selecting a larger hook size if your personal gauge runs smaller than specified, ensuring the finished shawl reaches the intended dimensions.

Pattern Format and Language

The Strata Shawl pattern is written using US crochet terminology and is provided as a downloadable PDF file, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The written format allows for easy reference while working and the ability to print the pattern for convenient crafting.
