Product Description
Sobrante came about one day when I was looking at leftover bits of sock yarn. I weighed out one ounce increments of seven different colorways, and now I don’t have any leftovers! It’s a simple knit, with an easily memorized cable pattern along the edge, and the size is completely customizable. You can use any yarn you like. Just stop knitting when you run out of leftovers!
Finished Size: 20” depth, 80” wingspan, as written. Easily adjustable.
Yarn: Any fingering weight yarn. Sample uses 7, one-ounce amounts of Tempting Ewe Ewe So Sparkly and Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio Sock.
Needles: 32” circular needle, size 4 US (3.500mm) or size to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 20 stitches/26 rows, per 4 inches in blocked garter stitch; gauge is not critical for this item but will affect size, yardage used, and drape.
Note: Instructions are given for how I knit the shawl. If you have more yarn, or less, use what you have; or, stop knitting when you’re at your desired width.
Sobrante Knit Shawl by Corrine Walcher
What Is Being Made
Sobrante is a customizable triangular knit shawl designed by independent designer Corrine Walcher. This intermediate-level knitting project features a finished size of 20 inches in depth and 80 inches in wingspan as written, though the dimensions are fully adjustable based on available yarn. The shawl was originally conceived as a practical solution for using up leftover sock yarn in small one-ounce increments across multiple colorways, making it an excellent stash-busting project for knitters with various yarn weights and colors on hand.
Techniques and Construction
Sobrante employs a straightforward knitting approach with an easily memorized cable pattern worked along the edges. The shawl uses a simple knit construction in garter stitch as the primary fabric, which creates a textured, reversible base. The cable edging adds visual interest and structure to the perimeter of the triangular shawl. Because the pattern is designed to be easily memorized, knitters can work on this project without constantly referring to written instructions once the stitch pattern is established. The true innovation of this design lies in its flexibility: knitters can customize the finished size by simply continuing to knit until their available yarn is exhausted, making it adaptable to any amount of leftover yarn.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the primary stitch forming the body of the shawl, created by knitting every row for a textured, reversible fabric
- Cable stitches – worked along the edges in a pattern that is easily memorized and repeated throughout the knitting process
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Any fingering weight yarn can be used for this project. The sample version uses seven one-ounce amounts of fingering weight yarn, combining Tempting Ewe Ewe So Sparkly and Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio Sock in various colorways. This multi-color approach creates visual interest while efficiently using up leftover yarn supplies.
Needles: A 32-inch circular needle in US size 4 (3.500mm) is required, or a needle size that achieves the recommended gauge.
Gauge: The pattern specifies 20 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches in blocked garter stitch. While gauge is noted as not critical for this item, achieving proper gauge will affect the final size, total yardage used, and the drape of the finished shawl.
