What is Being Made
The So Twisted Hat is a knitted beanie designed by Susanne Talluri and offered by Handmade By Zan Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted, classic hat available in three sizes: Small (20–22 inches / 51–56 cm circumference), Medium (21–23 inches / 53–58.5 cm circumference), and Large (22–24 inches / 56–61 cm circumference). The finished hat heights range from 8.25 inches to 8.5 inches when unblocked, making it a versatile everyday accessory.
Techniques and Construction
The So Twisted Hat employs cable knitting and twisted rib techniques to create visual interest and texture. The pattern features both written and charted instructions, accommodating knitters who prefer either format. The twisted rib technique is explained as a straightforward method of working stitches through the back loop combined with purl stitches, creating a refined, textured appearance. Cable work is integrated throughout the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to manipulate stitches and create the signature twisted effect that gives the hat its name.
Stitches Used
This intermediate-level pattern incorporates the following essential stitches and abbreviations:
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch
- Purl (p) – creating texture and pattern variation
- Knit through the back loop (k1tbl) – a twisted stitch variation used in the twisted rib sections
- Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) – for shaping and decreasing
- Slip stitch (sl) – used in cable work to move stitches to the cable needle
- Cable crosses – specifically L2C1 (left 2 cable 1) and R1C2 (right 1 cable 2) worked over 3 stitches each, creating the twisted cable motif
The pattern is worked in rounds (rnds), and the beginning of round (bor) is marked with a contrasting stitch marker, with 13, 14, or 15 additional stitch markers used to mark pattern repeats depending on the size being knitted.
Materials and Gauge
The So Twisted Hat is designed for worsted weight yarn, also known as Aran weight, making it an accessible project for knitters working with commonly available yarn weights. The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches in the blocked pattern, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Essential notions include one contrasting stitch marker for marking the beginning of round, 13 to 15 stitch markers for marking pattern repeats (depending on size), a cable needle for managing cable stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the So Twisted Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and twisted rib techniques. The combination of written and charted instructions provides flexibility for different learning preferences, and the straightforward construction—worked primarily in the round—makes it an excellent choice for building confidence with more advanced stitch techniques.
