How much time do you have to knit before the shower?

Baby Shower Countdown is a collection of baby knits, suitable for gift-giving, arranged by the amount of time you have to knit before the baby shower.

Whether you’re a beginner or advanced knitter, you’ll find that these patterns are knitter-friendly and fun to make. Additionally, each pattern includes links to free instructional videos to guide you through the trickier parts. The only skills required for this collection are casting-on, knitting, purling, and binding-off.

Sleep Sack by Staci Perry

What is Being Made

The Sleep Sack is a knitted garment designed for infants, available in two sizes to fit babies from newborn through six months old. This cozy wearable features a finished chest measurement of 18 inches for the 0-3 month size and 19 inches for the 6 month size. The pattern includes a hook and eye closure along with decorative tiny buttons, making it both functional and charming for a baby's wardrobe.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern incorporates several essential techniques that make it suitable for knitters with some experience. The construction utilizes both circular needles and double-pointed needles to shape the garment. Stitch manipulation techniques are central to the design, including yarn-over increases and decreases that create shaping throughout the piece. The pattern employs slip stitches worked with the yarn held in different positions (both in front and in back of work) to create textural or decorative elements. Stitch markers are used strategically throughout the project to help track pattern repeats and shaping points.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Sleep Sack pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping methods. Key stitches and abbreviations include:

  • Knit (K) – the basic knit stitch
  • Purl (P) – the basic purl stitch
  • Knit two together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
  • Knit into front and back (Kfb) – an increase that creates an extra stitch
  • Make 1 Left (M1L) – a left-leaning increase
  • Make 1 Right (M1R) – a right-leaning increase
  • Slip 3 stitches with yarn in back (Sl3wyib) – a slip stitch technique for texture
  • Slip 3 stitches with yarn in front (Sl3wyif) – an alternative slip stitch placement
  • Bind-off (BO) – finishing technique to secure stitches
  • Cast-on (CO) – foundation technique to begin the project

Materials and Yarn Information

The Sleep Sack is worked in DK weight or sport-weight yarn, requiring approximately 150 yards total. The pattern is designed to work with either a single color or two colors for added visual interest. The designer, Staci Perry, created the sample using Berroco Comfort DK yarn in two coordinating shades: Kittens (requiring 2 skeins) for the main color and Twinkles (requiring 1 skein) for accent work.

Needles required include a US size 7 circular needle available in either 16-inch or 24-inch lengths (the 16-inch size is necessary for working the smallest size), along with a US size 7 set of double-pointed needles for working in the round and shaping smaller sections. The pattern calls for a gauge of 5 stitches per inch, which is important to achieve for proper fit on a baby garment.

Additional materials needed to complete the project include 5 stitch markers (with one distinguished from the others for easier pattern tracking), a hook and eye closure for fastening, 3 tiny decorative buttons, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing details.
