Product Description
I designed these mitts in 2010, for my friend Susan, who had just learned to knit and wanted to try something a little challenging. She made several pairs! I just made one (mitt, not pair!) I am trying to clear out my studio, and came across this project. I love the yarn and the one mitt was really fetching. So I now have a pair and a pattern to share. Expect more knits from my attic soon.
Charted, so you need to work from charts to use this pattern. Worked in the round on double-point needles. Lace, cables, twisted stitches. Enjoy!
Shobu Mitts by Andrea Jurgrau
What is Being Made
The Shobu Mitts are a pair of knitted fingerless mitts inspired by Japanese irises. Designed by Andrea Jurgrau in 2010, these mitts were originally created as an intermediate-level project for a knitter seeking a moderate challenge. The design features visual elements referencing the delicate beauty of Shobu flowers, making them both a functional accessory and a wearable work of art.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at an intermediate difficulty level. The pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex stitch work and shaping. The design demonstrates that intermediate knitters can successfully create sophisticated, visually interesting pieces with proper guidance and instruction.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern information, the Shobu Mitts incorporate stitch patterns inspired by the iris flower motif. The construction involves shaping techniques appropriate for fitted mitts, allowing for a customized fit around the hand and wrist area. The pattern was designed with clarity in mind, making it accessible for knitters at the intermediate level who are expanding their technical repertoire.
Materials and Yarn
The Shobu Mitts are worked using sport weight yarn. The original pattern calls for one skein of a tightly twisted 100% merino sock yarn with approximately 400 yards per 150 grams. The project uses less than 100 grams of yarn, making it an economical choice for stash busting or trying new colorways.
The designer originally used Colinette Jitterbug in the Velvet Plum colorway, though this yarn is now discontinued. Suitable alternative yarns include Wonderland Yarn Mad Hatter and Malabrigo Superfine Merino, or any heavier sport weight merino options that provide similar yardage and fiber characteristics.
Pattern Origin and Details
This pattern comes from BadCatDesigns Knits from the Attic, a collection of previously designed projects being shared for personal use. The pattern was created in 2010 and has been refined for clarity and accuracy. The designer encourages knitters to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding pattern instructions.
