Sangria Shawl by Andrea Jurgrau
Project Overview
The Sangria Shawl is an advanced-level knitted triangular shawl designed by Andrea Jurgrau as part of the BadCatDesigns Summer 2012 Group Project. This elegant lace shawl combines delicate beadwork with fine yarn to create a sophisticated accessory perfect for warm-weather wear. The design is offered as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding project.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a triangular shawl featuring integrated beadwork throughout the design. The shawl is constructed as a single piece that grows from a point, making it an ideal project for those looking to create a versatile garment that can be worn draped over the shoulders or styled as a wrap.
Yarn and Materials
The Sangria Shawl is designed to work with lace-weight yarn. The original design calls for 1 skein of Starlight Semi-Solid Entrée from Lara's Creations in the colorway Crushed Boysenberries. This yarn contains 75% superwash Merino, 20% silk, and 5% Stellina, with each skein weighing 100 grams and providing 875 yards of yardage.
The pattern is flexible regarding yarn selection. Any fine yarn with equivalent yardage and Merino wool content will work, ranging from cobweb to light fingering weights. The designer recommends choosing semi-solid colors, ColourWave colors, or yarns with very long color repeats to showcase the lace pattern effectively. For color inspiration, the designer suggests selecting hues reminiscent of summer fruits such as berries, peach, or melon.
Beadwork is an essential component of this design. The pattern requires 20 grams of 8/0 beads to match the yarn color, with the original shown in Japanese F023D matt silver-lined Plum beads. Additionally, 10 grams of 6/0 or E beads with contrasting color to the yarn are needed. Beaders who wish to create a larger finished piece should plan to use additional bead quantities accordingly.
Techniques and Stitches
As an advanced knitting pattern, the Sangria Shawl employs sophisticated lace knitting techniques combined with integrated beadwork. The triangular construction allows for flexibility in the finished size, with several designated points throughout the pattern where knitters can add or subtract repeats to customize the shawl dimensions to their preference.
The pattern incorporates beading techniques alongside traditional lace stitchwork, requiring knitters to be comfortable with both methods. The use of fine yarn and delicate stitch patterns creates an intricate, openwork fabric characteristic of lace shawls, while the beads add visual interest and weight to the design.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The format allows knitters to print the instructions and reference them while working on their project.
