Product Description
I wanted to make a color work sock with the yarn I purchased at a local Fiber Fest last year. I came up with this motif when watching a movie set in Morocco.
These socks are a great way to add a little something extra to a plain stockinette sock. The colorwork is easy enough for a beginner, and since it is only at the cuff and toe, not overwhelming.
This is a top down sock with Eye of Partridge Heel Flap. It is worked using magic loop, Needle 1 will be the front of foot/leg and needle 2 will be back of foot/leg and heel.

What is Being Made
The Rusted Gate Socks are a pair of top-down knitted socks featuring colorwork design inspired by Moroccan aesthetics. This beginner-friendly knitting project combines two contrasting yarn colors to create a decorative motif worked throughout the leg and foot of the sock. The design uses an Eye of Partridge heel flap construction, making it a structured yet accessible sock pattern suitable for knitters new to sock construction.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental sock knitting techniques. The socks are worked top-down, meaning construction begins at the leg and progresses toward the toe. The pattern utilizes the magic loop method, a technique that allows knitters to work small circumferences using a single long circular needle rather than traditional double-pointed needles. The magic loop method divides the work into two sections: needle 1 handles the front of the foot and leg, while needle 2 manages the back of the foot and heel. The heel is constructed using an Eye of Partridge heel flap, a classic sock heel technique that creates a durable, textured heel through strategic stitch placement and slip stitches.
Colorwork is central to this design, with the pattern incorporating two contrasting yarn colors (MC for main color and CC for contrasting color) to create the distinctive Moroccan-inspired motif. This two-color stranding technique adds visual interest while remaining manageable for beginner knitters.
Stitches Used
The pattern is primarily worked in stockinette stitch (st st), the foundational stitch for most sock patterns. The Eye of Partridge heel flap incorporates slip stitches to create texture and reinforce the heel area. The colorwork sections utilize stranded knitting, where two yarn colors are carried across the work to create the pattern. The cast-on method specified is the Old Norwegian Cast On or a stretchy alternative, both of which provide the elasticity necessary for sock cuffs.
Materials and Specifications
The Rusted Gate Socks pattern calls for fingering weight yarn in two colors. The main color (MC) requires 50-100 grams, with the sample using Blue Savannah Sandhill Crane OOAK yarn. The contrasting color (CC) requires 20-30 grams, with the sample featuring Western Sky Knits MCN in Winter Wheat. Both yarns are fingering weight, appropriate for the fine gauge required in sock knitting.
Needle requirements include a US #1.5/2.5mm 32-inch circular needle for the main knitting and a US #1/2.25mm 32-inch circular needle for obtaining proper gauge, or one size larger than the gauge needle as needed. Additional tools include a stitch marker for tracking rounds and a darning needle for weaving in ends and grafting the toe closure.
The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 32 stitches and 40 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch when worked on US #1.5/2.5mm needles. Three size options are available with cast-on counts of 56, 64, or 72 stitches, accommodating different foot circumferences.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent introduction to sock knitting. While it incorporates multiple techniques including colorwork and heel construction, each element is executed in a straightforward manner that builds fundamental skills without overwhelming new sock knitters.
