Product Description

I love bold, almost abstract patterns. These mitts pair up some simple patterns along with bold roses! These mitts have a long story over two or three years; involving color changes, gauge changes, many mitts knit up, mittens getting lost at a now closed down magazine, till I finally gave up and started again in the colors I really wanted all along!

These mittens use 6 different colors of yarn: Two are the main colors: Oyster Heather (A, cream), and Coriander Heather (F, darker cream) Three reds are used in the Roses: Tomato (B, bright true red), Raspberry Heather (C, cool toned red), and Rosehip (D, coral toned red) One contrasting color is used: Turmeric (E, deep dirty yellow) One ball of each will be sufficient The mitts are fitted, with long cuffs. The thumb gusset is shaped, giving a right hand and a left hand. The cuff is turned under, and stitched down for a clean finish. They are knit from the bottom up. The pattern is charted.

Rosy Mittens by Jenise Reid

Project Overview

Rosy Mittens is an advanced knitting pattern designed by Jenise Reid that creates a pair of fitted mittens suitable for those wearing ladies shoe sizes 5-7 or 8-10. This downloadable PDF pattern combines colorwork techniques with traditional mitten construction to produce a finished accessory featuring warm, rosy tones.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a pair of mittens with a sophisticated color palette inspired by warm, earthy hues. The mittens are sized to fit smaller to medium hands and incorporate multiple colors throughout the design, creating visual interest through strategic color placement and stranding.

Knitting Techniques Used

This advanced pattern employs colorwork knitting as its primary technique, requiring knitters to work with multiple yarn colors simultaneously. The pattern utilizes stranded colorwork (also called Fair Isle knitting), where unused colors are carried across the back of the work. Knitters must manage multiple yarn colors while maintaining even tension and consistent stitch quality—a skill that distinguishes advanced projects from beginner patterns.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern involves standard mitten construction techniques typical of colorwork mittens. The design requires careful attention to stitch gauge and color changes to achieve the intended finished dimensions and visual effect.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for Knit Picks Palette fingering weight yarn, which is 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. Each ball contains 231 yards and weighs 50 grams. One ball of each of the following six colors is required:

  • Oyster Heather (A): Cream—serves as the primary contrast color
  • Tomato (B): Bright red—one of three red-toned colors
  • Raspberry Heather (C): Purple-toned red—the second red variation
  • Rose Hip (D): Coral-toned red—the third red variation
  • Turmeric (E): Dirty yellow—a warm neutral tone
  • Coriander Heather (F): Light cool-toned brown—a complementary neutral

Color Selection and Substitution Guidance

The pattern provides detailed guidance for yarn substitution, recognizing that knitters may not have access to the exact Knit Picks Palette colors. The designer recommends that the three red colors (B, C, and D) should appear very similar to one another when photographed in black and white, ensuring visual harmony in the finished mittens. Alternatively, knitters may choose to use a single red color for all three positions.

Colors E and F (the yellow and brown tones) should similarly appear comparable in grayscale photography. Color A (the cream) should be distinctly brighter or darker than both the red group and the yellow-brown group when viewed in black and white, creating clear contrast in the colorwork pattern. The designer notes that B, C, and D may either match or differ from E and F in the actual color photograph.

For yarn shoppers without samples at home, the pattern suggests using a smartphone's black and white camera setting to photograph potential yarn colors before purchasing, ensuring accurate color matching for the project's success.

Yarn Weight and Needle Specifications

This pattern uses 3-ply fingering weight yarn, a standard choice for detailed colorwork projects. Fingering weight yarn allows for fine stitch definition, making the colorwork pattern clearly visible in the finished mittens. The specific needle size required for this pattern is not included in the provided content; knitters should refer to the complete PDF pattern for needle gauge and sizing information.

Difficulty Level

Classified as an advanced pattern, Rosy Mittens is best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable with colorwork techniques, managing multiple yarn colors, and maintaining consistent tension throughout a project. The combination of stranded colorwork and fitted mitten construction requires strong foundational knitting skills.
