Retro Throwback Socks by Twin Stitches Designs
What is Being Made
Retro Throwback Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for classic socks designed by Twin Stitches Designs. The pattern includes three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, accommodating 56, 64, and 72 stitches respectively. These socks feature a retro aesthetic created through colorwork techniques that combine a main color with two contrasting accent colors for a vintage-inspired design.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to sock construction. The straightforward construction and classic techniques used throughout the pattern provide an accessible introduction to sock knitting without overwhelming complexity.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Retro Throwback Socks employ several fundamental knitting techniques essential to sock construction:
- Long tail cast on – used to create the initial stitches for the cuff with an elastic edge suitable for sock openings
- Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch pattern creating a smooth, classic fabric surface
- Colorwork – the pattern incorporates two contrast colors alongside the main color to achieve the retro aesthetic
- Heel construction – the heel is worked in sections, with the pattern notes indicating heel shaping worked on needle 1
- Cuff ribbing – implied through the pattern structure for a fitted sock opening
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Retro Throwback Socks is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of classic sock construction. The gauge is measured at 36 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches (10.1 centimeters) in unblocked stockinette, providing a dense, durable fabric suitable for everyday wear. The colorwork elements are integrated into the stockinette base, creating visual interest while maintaining structural integrity.
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for 2.25 mm needles in US size 1, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge for your chosen yarn. A tapestry needle (quantity: 2) is required for weaving in ends and finishing the socks. The needle size is specifically calibrated to work with fingering weight yarn to produce the proper gauge and fabric density.
Yarn and Materials
The Retro Throwback Socks pattern uses fingering weight yarn in a three-color combination:
- Main color: 100 grams of fingering weight yarn. The sample was knit using Knit Picks Stroll Tweed in Lavender Field Heather, a blend of 65% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon, and 10% Donegal Tweed, yielding 231 yards per 50 grams
- Contrast color 1: 50 grams of fingering weight yarn. The sample used Knit Picks Stroll in Jack Rabbit Heather, composed of 75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon, with 231 yards per 50 grams
- Contrast color 2: 50 grams of fingering weight yarn. The sample used Knit Picks Capretta in Pino Heather, made from 80% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon, providing 230 yards per 50 grams
The yarn choices emphasize superwash merino wool blends, which offer durability, softness, and easy care – essential qualities for socks that will be frequently worn and washed. The inclusion of nylon in all three yarns increases elasticity and wear resistance. The cashmere component in the second contrast color adds luxury and softness to the finished socks.
Pattern Format
The Retro Throwback Socks pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access the complete instructions digitally. The pattern includes detailed notes on sizing, gauge, materials, and construction methods, with the sample photographed in the specific yarn colors recommended for achieving the retro aesthetic.
