Product Description
Poodle, Pug & Rottweiler Knitted Dog Toys Pattern by Amanda Berry – Deramores Studio DK Acrylic
This intermediate-level knitting pattern by designer Amanda Berry delivers three charming knitted dog toys — a Poodle, a Pug, and a Rottweiler — collectively known as the Dera-dogs. Each finished toy stands approximately 21cm tall and is stuffed with toy filling to create a soft, three-dimensional figure. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF from Deramores and is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it well suited to knitters who are comfortable with shaping techniques and working individual pieces that are then seamed and assembled. Please note that the finished toys are not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts.
About the Designer
Amanda Berry is a knitted toy specialist who graduated from the London College of Fashion. She is known for creating endearing stuffed animal designs that combine precise shaping with playful character, and the Dera-dogs collection is a wonderful example of her signature style — lovable, breed-specific toy dogs brought to life through knitting.
The Three Designs
The Poodle
The Poodle captures the breed's iconic fluffy silhouette through careful knitted shaping. Its distinctive curly coat texture and elegant proportions are rendered in knitted form, making it one of the more recognisable designs in the trio. The Poodle's construction involves knitting individual body sections that are stuffed and assembled to achieve its characteristic upright, 21cm-tall stance.
The Pug
The Pug toy reflects the breed's famously compact, stocky body and expressive face. The pattern uses shaping techniques to suggest the Pug's rounded head and snub-nosed features. Like all three designs, the Pug uses 12mm toy safety eyes to give it a lifelike and appealing expression, and a 10mm button collar adds a charming finishing detail.
The Rottweiler
The Rottweiler design uses the Ebony (Yarn C) and Chocolate (Yarn B) colourways to replicate the breed's classic black-and-tan markings. Its sturdy, muscular silhouette is achieved through knitted shaping and stuffing, and the same safety eye and button collar finishing is applied to complete the look.
Techniques Used
This pattern draws on a range of fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. Knitters will work flat knitting on straight needles, producing individual pieces that are later seamed together using a darning needle. Key shaping methods used throughout the pattern include:
- Kfb (Knit into the front and back of the stitch) — a simple increase used to add stitches and shape the body, limbs, and head sections
- K2tog (Knit 2 together) — a right-leaning decrease used to reduce stitch counts and taper sections such as the muzzle, ears, and legs
- Repetition of stitch sequences across rows to build up the body fabric evenly
- Seaming and assembly of multiple knitted components to form the three-dimensional toy
- Attaching toy safety eyes and button collars as finishing details
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) — the foundational stitch used throughout
- Purl (P) — used in combination with knit stitches to create stockinette stitch (stocking stitch), the primary fabric of the toys
- Stockinette stitch — the main stitch pattern, worked by alternating knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, even fabric ideal for toy construction
- Kfb increase and K2tog decrease as shaping stitches
