Product Description
I have always adored spunky little owls. So, when I contemplated a top down colorwork sweater, I just had to use a spunky little owl motif inspired from that spunky little owl from the movies featuring everyone’s favorite boy wizard! The yarn is a wonderful choice for colorwork. The colors are vibrant and it blocks wonderfully creating a soft, cozy fabric.

Pigwidgeon Colorwork Sweater by Terri Kruse
What is Being Made
Pigwidgeon is a top-down colorwork sweater featuring a spunky little owl motif inspired by a beloved character from popular fiction. This knitted garment is designed for children in sizes ranging from 12/18 months through 8/10 years, with finished chest measurements from 20.25 to 29 inches and lengths from 12.75 to 20 inches.
Knitting Techniques Used
This advanced-level sweater employs top-down construction, a method that begins at the neckline and progresses downward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and seamless integration of colorwork patterns. The design incorporates colorwork knitting, a technique that uses multiple yarn colors within the same row to create the detailed owl motif across the body of the sweater. The garment is worked in the round, utilizing circular needles and double-pointed needles for seamless construction.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The sweater is primarily worked in Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying colorwork patterns. The pattern incorporates several shaping and decreasing techniques essential to garment construction:
- K2tog (knit 2 stitches together) - a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- SSK (slip, slip, knit) - a left-leaning decrease that provides balanced shaping
- M1L (make one left) - an increase worked by lifting the strand between stitches from the front and knitting through the back loop, used to add stitches for expansion
- Bind off - cast off technique to finish edges
- Cast on - foundation technique for beginning the sweater at the neckline
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for Sunshine Yarns Classic Sock, a high-quality yarn composed of 100% Superwash Merino fiber. This yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, providing excellent stitch definition for displaying the colorwork design. Each 100-gram skein yields 370 yards of yardage.
The color palette consists of three colors:
- MC (Main Color) - Chocolate (brown): 2 to 3 skeins depending on size
- CC1 (Contrast Color 1) - Parchment (off white): 1 skein across all sizes
- CC2 (Contrast Color 2): specified in pattern (quantity not fully detailed in provided excerpt)
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch when the finished sweater is washed and blocked, ensuring proper fit and drape of the final garment.
Tools and Equipment
Knitters will need double-pointed needles (dpn) for working in the round, along with stitch markers (pm) to denote pattern repeats and construction sections. Circular needles are implied for the main body construction in this top-down design.
