Product Description
Little lacy paw-prints track up the front and back of these toe-up socks, between ribbed panels. Dogs, cats, panthers, wolves - I don't know who these paw-prints belong to... Made in 4 ply fingering, they start with a provisional cast-on to work the toe in simplified 2 needle short rows, before continuing with 4 dpns (or 2 circulars if you usually do this). The heel flap is done in a slip stitch pattern to give cushioned comfort and a better shape. Size is for a medium women's foot but the length can be altered. Use any 4 ply/fingering sock yarn you like – a single colour helps the pattern stand out better.
Paw-print Socks by Rian Anderson
What Is Being Made
Paw-print Socks are a pair of women's medium knitted socks featuring decorative lacy paw-print motifs that track up both the front and back of the leg. The socks are designed with ribbed panels flanking the central paw-print pattern, creating an attractive visual design element. These are functional, wearable socks with a foot length of 25 cm, sock length from cuff to heel base of 23 cm, and a circumference around the foot of 22.5 cm.
Construction Method and Techniques
Paw-print Socks are worked using the toe-up construction method, meaning knitting begins at the toes and progresses toward the cuff. This approach offers advantages in fit customization and yarn management. The pattern employs several specialized knitting techniques:
- Provisional cast-on – used to create a temporary foundation that allows the toe to be worked and later grafted closed seamlessly
- Simplified 2-needle short rows – employed for the initial toe shaping, a streamlined approach to creating the toe box
- Slip stitch heel – a durable heel construction technique that creates cushioned comfort and improved shaping through slipped stitches, which reinforce the heel flap and extend sock longevity
- Lace stitch pattern – used to create the decorative paw-print motifs between the ribbed sections
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The sock incorporates multiple stitch techniques to achieve both structure and decoration. Ribbed panels provide elasticity and help the socks stay in place on the leg. The lacy paw-print pattern is created using yarn overs and decreases to form openwork designs that resemble paw prints. The slip stitch pattern used in the heel flap creates a textured, cushioned surface by slipping stitches rather than knitting them, which also produces a more durable heel that resists wear.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Paw-print Socks are designed to be made in 4 ply fingering weight yarn, a fine yarn weight ideal for sock knitting. The pattern requires approximately 85 grams of yarn, which yields roughly 297.5 meters based on the standard yardage of 4 ply sock yarn (approximately 350 meters per 100 grams). Knitting needles should be 2.75 mm (US size 2) or sized to achieve the correct tension for the yarn being used.
Tools and Equipment Required
The pattern accommodates flexible needle options for knitters with different preferences. Knitters may use either 4 double-pointed needles (dpns) or 2 short circular needles for the main sock construction. Additional tools include a crochet hook slightly larger than the working needles (used for provisional cast-on and grafting), small safety pins for marking rows during pattern work, and large safety pins for holding stitches temporarily. A contrast yarn approximately 1 meter in length is needed for the provisional cast-on.
Difficulty Level
Paw-print Socks are rated as intermediate difficulty, making them suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The pattern requires competency with short-row shaping, lace stitch reading, slip stitch techniques, and working on multiple needles or circulars simultaneously. The toe-up construction and provisional cast-on add technical elements that distinguish this project from beginner sock patterns.
Designer and Format
Paw-print Socks were designed by Rian Anderson and are presented as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing knitters to access the full instructions digitally. The pattern is an independent designer project, offering a unique design outside of large commercial pattern publishers.
