Out and About Vest by Nancy Brown
What Is Being Made
The Out and About Vest is a versatile crocheted sleeveless garment designed for intermediate-level crocheters. This vest is available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 30-32") through 3X-Large (to fit bust 54-60"), with finished bust measurements from 36" to 64". The vest features a structured construction with a defined back and front panels, making it suitable for layering in various seasons and occasions.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level project employs several foundational crochet techniques to create visual interest and structure. The vest begins with a chain foundation and uses a combination of single crochet and decorative stitches to establish the garment's base. The construction method involves working from the lower edge upward, with careful attention to stitch placement and spacing to maintain proper gauge and fit across all size options.
The pattern utilizes a systematic approach to shaping, with specific instructions for the vest back panel that establish the overall width and proportions. Rows are worked with turning chains to create the necessary height and drape for a finished garment. The intermediate skill level indicates that crocheters should be comfortable with reading pattern abbreviations, maintaining consistent tension, and executing multiple stitch types in sequence.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc) – Used in the foundation row and throughout the pattern for structural elements and joining
- Double Crochet (dc) – A primary stitch used to build height and create the main fabric
- V-Stitch (V-St) – Defined as (dc, ch 2, dc) in the same stitch, creating a decorative V-shaped motif that adds visual texture and openwork elements
- Cluster (CL) – A specialty stitch created by keeping the last loop of each double crochet on the hook, working 2 dc in the next chain-2 space, then drawing yarn through all 3 loops on the hook to create a compact, textured stitch
- Slip Stitch – Used in the "Join with sc" technique for connecting rounds and finishing edges
- Chain Stitches (ch) – Used for spacing, turning chains, and creating the openwork sections between V-Stitches
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Out and About Vest is designed to be worked with Simply DK yarn by Paintbox Yarns, a DK-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. The yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 3 balls (approximately 906 yards total), Medium requires 4 balls (approximately 1,208 yards), Large requires 4 balls, Medium-Large requires 5 balls, 2X-Large requires 5 balls, and 3X-Large requires 6 balls (approximately 1,812 yards). The pattern specifies Lt Caramel #108 as the featured colorway, though the DK weight allows for yarn substitution with other DK-weight options of similar yardage.
A U.S. Size G crochet hook is recommended for this project. The specified gauge is 4½ double crochets and 2 rows = 1 inch, which is essential to achieve the correct finished measurements across all size options. Maintaining this gauge ensures proper fit and the intended drape of the finished vest.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern provides comprehensive sizing information with six distinct options. The foundation row for the vest back begins with a chain of 86 (98, 110, 122, 132, 155) stitches depending on size selection. The foundation row establishes 14 (16, 18, 20, 22, 25) V-Stitches, which form the decorative base pattern. This systematic sizing approach allows crocheters to select the appropriate size based on desired finished bust measurement rather than body measurement alone, providing flexibility for different wearing preferences and layering needs.
