My First Easter Chick Knitted Toy by Andrew Lucas
What is Being Made
My First Easter Chick is a beginner-friendly knitted toy designed as a soft, stuffed Easter decoration. The finished toy measures approximately 13 centimeters in height, making it an ideal size for small hands or Easter baskets. This project creates a charming chick figure suitable for children and collectors of handmade seasonal decorations.
Craft and Technique Overview
This design uses fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners learning to develop their skills. The construction method involves creating the body and head as a single continuous piece, which simplifies the assembly process and reduces the number of seams required. The toy is worked from cast-on through to a gathered top closure, demonstrating how basic shaping techniques can create three-dimensional forms from flat knitted fabric.
Stitches and Shaping Methods Used
- Stocking stitch – the primary fabric throughout the body and head sections, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, finished appearance on the right side
- Garter stitch – mentioned in the abbreviations as an alternative knit-based texture
- Increases – used strategically to expand stitch counts, including increasing in every stitch across a row to double the stitch count from 25 to 50 stitches for the body, and localized increases to shape the head
- Decreases – applied to reduce stitch counts and create shaping, including knit two together (k2tog) decreases worked across entire rows to narrow the shoulders and head
- Bind and tie (B and T) – the finishing technique where remaining stitches are threaded onto a tapestry needle, drawn up tightly, and secured to close the top of the head
Construction Sequence
The toy is constructed in two main sections. The body begins with 25 cast-on stitches that are increased in every stitch on the first row to create 50 stitches, establishing the widest part of the chick. Stocking stitch is then worked for 21 rows to build the body depth. Shoulder shaping is achieved by working knit two together across an entire row, reducing back to 25 stitches. The head section begins with strategic increases that expand the stitch count to 37 stitches, creating the rounder head proportion. After 17 rows of stocking stitch, decreases are worked in two stages to gradually taper the head, first reducing to 25 stitches, then to 13 stitches, which are finally gathered and secured.
Materials and Tools
- Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles throughout the entire project
- Yarn: Double knitting weight wool in five colors – lemon (primary body color), light blue, green, orange, and black (for details such as eyes and beak). The pattern specifies using oddments, meaning small leftover quantities of yarn are sufficient
- Finishing supplies: Small amount of polyester or wool stuffing to fill the toy and create dimension, plus a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and executing the bind and tie closure
Skill Level and Learning Value
Designed as a beginner project, My First Easter Chick teaches essential knitting fundamentals including casting on, basic stitch work, increasing and decreasing for shaping, and finishing techniques. The relatively short row counts and straightforward stitch patterns make this an excellent introduction to creating three-dimensional knitted objects. Crafters completing this project will gain confidence in reading pattern abbreviations, executing increases and decreases, and understanding how shaping creates form in knitted fabric.
