Product Description

Muriel is worked top-down in one piece. The circular yoke has mosaic colorwork reminiscent of mid-century modern design elements. Was there a formica table in your childhood that looked like this? Muriel is a good mid-century name, and when I was designing the yoke another Muriel was painting the streets in Washington DC!

Muriel Knit Sweater by ML Egan

What is Being Made

Muriel is a knitted pullover sweater designed by ML Egan, available in ten sizes ranging from XS to 2XL. The finished garment offers chest measurements from 34 inches (86 cm) up to 60 inches (152 cm), with a standard length of 32 inches (80 cm). The design features approximately 2–6 inches (5–15 cm) of ease built in, allowing for comfortable wearing room. This intermediate-level knitting project is ideal for knitters seeking to expand their technical skills while creating a versatile, wearable garment.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Muriel employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create a well-constructed sweater. The garment is worked using circular needles for the main body and sleeves, with ribbed sections at the cuffs, hem, and neckline providing structure and elasticity. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the magic loop method are used for smaller circumference sections including the neck ribbing, body ribbing, and pocket lining. The pattern incorporates set-in sleeves and includes pocket details, which require careful stitch management using waste yarn to hold stitches temporarily during construction. This construction method demonstrates intermediate knitting proficiency, as it requires understanding of gauge, shaping, and seamless knitting techniques.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The Muriel sweater utilizes ribbed knit stitches as a primary design element. Ribbing appears throughout the garment—at the cuffs, body hem, and neckline—creating vertical columns that enhance fit and recovery. While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern (including DPN for double-pointed needles and BOR for beginning of round), the core construction relies on fundamental stitches combined with shaping techniques such as increases and decreases to create the fitted silhouette and sleeve cap shaping.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Muriel is designed for sport weight yarn (also called 5-ply weight), which is a lightweight option ideal for creating garments with drape and breathability. The pattern calls for Great Southern Yarn Elizabeth Macarthur in the main color (MC), with yardage requirements ranging from 4 skeins for the smallest sizes (XS and S) to 7 skeins for the largest size (2XL). This yardage range reflects the graduated sizing throughout the pattern.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires two sizes of needles to achieve proper gauge and fabric characteristics:

  • US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needle in 32-inch (80 cm) length for ribbed sections at the neck, body, and sleeves
  • Larger circular needles (size to be determined by individual gauge swatching) for the main body and sleeve stockinette sections
  • DPNs or longer circular needles for working the magic loop method on smaller circumferences such as neck ribbing, body ribbing, and pocket lining

Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, waste yarn in a contrasting color for securing pocket openings and temporarily holding sleeve stitches, and narrow ribbon as an alternative to waste yarn for stitch holders.

Gauge and Sizing Considerations

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project, as the pattern provides specific finished measurements for each of the ten sizes. Knitters are advised to knit a gauge swatch using the sport weight yarn and larger needles to ensure their tension matches the designer's specifications. The pattern notes that larger sizes may benefit from a longer needle or adjusting needle size to maintain consistent gauge, emphasizing the importance of customization based on individual knitting tension.
